Oliwia and Claudia chose to be part of the "Waste" theme, using plastic cups, plastic bags and some old holiday cards.
Their outfits are looking pretty amazing! Mom said there will be some accessories... one more month to go.
Oliwia, 5th Grade
Claudia, Kindergarten
Izzy's idea was to do the water theme and she wants to make a mermaid costume out of plastic bags. Her idea made me think of two things: the problem of plastics in the ocean and NYC’s attempt to out a 5 cent fee on plastic bags that was squashed by Albany at the last minute so I thought the narrative for this could be something along the lines of "Plastic bags account for 1,700 tons of garbage each week in NYC many of which end up in the ocean. Plastics in the ocean are harmful the fish, other wildlife and ultimately human health. Bring your own bag and save the mermaids!" I’m not sure if this belongs in the waste theme of the ocean theme or maybe it’s a hybrid. ~mom, Sarah
