Political Scientists in Japan
Political Scientists in Japan (PSJ) is a database of political scientists in Japan and their articles. This database contains articles published in the top 22 political science journals by scholars residing in Japan. I hope this information helps find collaborators and institutions in Japan.
Number of articles published in each journal since 2000. Top, semi-top, and major journals are indicated in red, orange, and gray colors, respectively. PSJ score is 3*(top journals) + 2*(semi-top journals) + 1*(major journals). The table is sorted by PSJ score. The names of researchers and institutes are translated with Google Translate. Some translations are inaccurate (e.g., Koji Kagotani was mistakenly translated to Kagotani Corporation). Please google the Japanese names for accurate translations.

The total count of researchers × articles published in each journal since 2000. For example, if three researchers belonging to the same institution publish one co-authored article in APSR, it is counted as three publications (not one). The top, semi-top, and major journals are indicated in red, orange, and gray colors, respectively. PSJ score is 3*(top journals) + 2*(semi-top journals) + 1*(major journals). The table is sorted by PSJ score. PSJ scores are based on the current affiliation, not on the time of publication. The names of institutes are translated with Google Translate. Some translations may be inaccurate.

A list of researchers × articles published in each journal since 2000. The information on the articles is automatically generated from the DOI. The table is sorted by the updated date. There are a few papers whose titles are not registered in Crossref and are left blank. Please refer to the DOI links for more information. The names of researchers and institutes are translated with Google Translate. Some translations are inaccurate (e.g., Koji Kagotani was mistakenly translated to Kagotani Corporation). Please google the Japanese names for accurate translations.

Researchers: All researchers residing in Japan are included. Any nationality and field of expertise are included. Overseas residents, temporary returnees, or those whose affiliation cannot be confirmed are not included. Also, researchers temporarily visiting Japan from abroad on sabbatical or other temporary assignments are not included. Those who temporarily visit overseas from Japan for sabbatical or other reasons are included.
Articles: All articles published in the following journals in 2000 or later are included. Articles are included as long as they have an official DOI and the publication can be confirmed on the journal's website. Past articles are also included (e.g., articles published when a researcher was abroad). Research notes and Short articles are also included, but articles with more specific purpuses (e.g., Special issue introduction, Data feature, Review article, Book review, Comment, Errata, Country report) are not included. Letters are included if they are comparable to Research note or Short article. Registered reports are included only after the journal has accepted the entire article. Special issues articles are included. No distinction is made between single-authored and co-authored articles.

11 Sep 2025: The display order of the articles. Japanese names in the English page.
The display order of the articles was changed to the date added to PSJ. This allows users to check the latest papers. Researchers' Japanese names were added to English pages so that people can check mistranslations in GOOGLETRANSLATE.
2 Sep 2025: Revised codebook regarding DOI registration
This site uses the Crossref API to extract bibliographic information from DOIs. Therefore, the codebook has been modified so that PSJ adds entries upon the registration of an article in Crossref. When submissions are made before Crossref registration, the administrator will register them with PSJ after Crossref registration (however, this may take some time).
25 Aug 2025: Full English conversion of this page
The names of researchers and institutes originally in Japanese were converted to English using GOOGLETRANSLATE function in Google Sheets. While the English names of institutes are generally accurate, there are a fair number of mistranslations in the names of researchers. Please be careful when using the English names of researchers.
