Why did I choose to study Biology?
I chose Biology because knowing about life, in general, excites me a lot since my freshmen year in high school. I still remember the teacher who taught my Biology class who made the class so interesting and easygoing that going to the class was exciting every day. I plan to do a minor in Business from the Kelly School of Business while my time here at IUPUI which provides me with an educational foundation on finances. Next, being a part of the School of Science has helped me gain knowledge not only on an academic level but also gave me a chance to meet extremely honored professors and my peers, and introduced me to opportunities such as LHSI.
Experiences and Skills
On my way to the campus, I always see a beggar on the street by the traffic light. I always remember my god and give him a water bottle or a food packet. This token of sharing made me grow my bond stronger with god but also helped me realize that I should be grateful for everything I have and serve a helping hand to someone. I used to volunteer at IU Health Hospital on campus where my job was to guide people to their appointments and deliver notes/ cards to patients. I was also blessed to participate in donating goods to Riley Hospital through a gathering of members of the pre-dental club. The picture on the right was taken by one of the members of the pre-dental club. I am grateful that I have been part of these volunteer organizations.
My work experiences include...
*Pharmacy Technician- in Training, Walmart
As a Pharmacy Tech in training, I have multiple roles such as performing highly detailed work with focus and accuracy with numerous potential distractions in a busy environment. While helping the register lines, I maintain a gentle/ welcoming posture, greet the customers and help them check out their medications. I am required to maintain good communication and a safe environment for my work colleagues and customers while following the instructions of my Pharmacists.
Some challenges include medical knowledge of medications when answering medical questions from customers, and the constant request for help for answering/ making calls for prescriptions.
*Exam Proctor, Indiana University School of Dentistry
I recently started working at IUSD as an exam proctor where I need to maintain high Integrity to make sure students do not cheat. I need to maintain professionalism with my students and another proctor in the exam hall.
Throughout the fall semester, I learned quite a bit about exploring myself and my career. This fall semester has been one of the best semesters so far because I got to explore my college life while celebrating my tradition and festivals with my friends/ family. I learned to maintain a balance between my academics and the life I have outside of college in a way by engaging in many festivities that came along the way such as Diwali, birthday celebrations, and Navratri. Reflecting back to the fall semester, I realized that when working in a professional stage requires people to connect with their traditions and background because that can bring out a totally different personality of a person which can be very unique in today's world where people are often considered fake. This lesson has become very important to me and strengthened my career choice as well.
Teamwork
My recent job as a pharmacy Technician has taught me many skills such as working as a team, problem-solving within the team, actively listening to my team members and customers, respecting experienced technicians, great communication skills with everyone around me, and maintaining a friendly environment no matter at work or out in public. These skills are not limited to working space but also apply to the outside world. I have gained confidence that I can work as a team and as a leader as well because from my work experience I have seen my Pharmacist being the leader and how his helpers react/ respond to the unexpected situation and I have learned to manage the skills listed above from those people and my Pharmacist. Furthermore, I served as a volunteer at Brownsburg Public Library, IU Hospital on campus, and Regatta during my freshmen year. I had an opportunity to serve my community and experience how hospitals work on a daily basis and how a team stands by each other to achieve the goals as a whole.
