On November 12th, we took a group of Magnolia Glen residents on a bus tour around NC State's campus. We stopped at popular points around the campus and entertained the residents with information about each stop. Our stops included the Belltower, Talley Student Center, and more! Our goal for the program was to provide residents with an informational and personal tour of popular locations at NC State while providing them with a way to socialize with us and each other.
1:00: Leave Magnolia Glen
1:30-1:40: Memorial Belltower
1:45-1:55: Talley Student Center & Reynold's Coliseum
2:05-2:15: Hunt Library, Centennial Campus
2:30-3:30: Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery
Richard: The library (Hunt Library on Centennial Campus)
Fred: This is my favorite (Howling Cow Ice Cream)
Nancy: Well, I worked on Main Campus part-time and Centennial too. So, I enjoyed all of it. But, the library was outstanding. I would like to go inside that.
Nancy: I would like to see the new gym, the new facility. And he, (Fred) started out as a coach and teacher, and he would love the gym.
Fred: I am quite familiar with the area.
Nancy: Because we lived in Cary for 25 years.
Nancy: Have a microphone. And, perhaps inform Sherron that people needed a credit card here (at Howling Cow). That would have helped. I thought everyone’s speech was good, but I am not sure if the people in the back (of the bus) could hear.
Educate residents on new additions to campus such as Talley Student Union and Hunt Library
Residents will be educated on dairy farming as well as how Howling Cow ice cream is made
Aid residents in feeling more connected to the changing community of Raleigh
We learned through interviewing residents and speaking with our site supervisor that we met all of our intended program outcomes. With each speech at the different stops, we engaged the residents with NC State's campus and shared personal stories to help them connect to us and the community. We also realize that there were areas of our program that needed improvement. The areas of improvement included the need for a microphone on the bus and emphasizing that the residents would need a credit card to pay at Howling Cow. Overall, the NC State Bus tour was a success and residents are excited about returning to tour more specific sites, such as Hunt Library.
