Stripe CONNECT in a few simple steps
User Registration: A user enters their email address while signing up for an account.
Send Verification Email: The system sends an email to the address provided by the user. This email contains a unique link or a verification code.
Open Verification Email: The user receives the email in their inbox (or sometimes in the spam/junk folder) and opens it.
Click on Verification Link: The email will include a verification link that, when clicked, redirects the user to a webpage to confirm their email address.
Google Authenticator App: After entering the correct password, the system prompts the user to provide a verification code generated by the Google Authenticator app. The Google Authenticator app is a mobile app that generates a time-based one-time password (TOTP) every 30 seconds. The user opens the app on their smartphone, finds the code associated with the service they're logging into, and enters that code into the provided field. If the code is correct, the user is granted access.
Mobile Phone (SMS): If the user cannot access the Google Authenticator app (for example, due to losing their phone or deleting the app), the system provides a backup method. The user can opt to receive a text message (SMS) on their registered mobile phone number containing a one-time verification code. They enter this code to complete the login.
Emergency Backup Code: During the setup of two-step authentication, the user is often provided with emergency backup codes. These are a set of one-time use codes that the user should store securely, typically written down or saved in a password manager. In case the user is unable to access their phone (either for the Authenticator app or for SMS/call verification), they can use one of these backup codes to complete the login. Each backup code can only be used once and must be regenerated after they’re exhausted.
Stripe collects specific information for several important reasons related to legal compliance, operational functionality, and security. Here’s a breakdown of why each type of information is collected:
Why: To comply with financial regulations, including anti-money laundering (AML) laws, Stripe must verify the identity of individuals or businesses that use its platform. This includes collecting:
Business/Personal details (e.g., name, address, date of birth)
Reason: This helps prevent illegal activities like money laundering or fraud and ensures that Stripe knows the individuals or entities using its services.
Business Authenticity
Why: Stripe will collect information about the nature of your business (such as the business name, website, and type of services or products) to ensure that your activities align with their terms of service and to assess risk.
Reason: This helps Stripe determine if the business type is eligible for their services and to prevent illegal or high-risk businesses from using the platform.
Payment Processing
Why: Stripe needs bank account details and financial information to enable payouts to users and to manage payment transfers between customers and businesses.
Reason: This ensures that money is transferred smoothly and securely to the correct bank accounts, enabling users to receive their funds from sales or services.
Statement descriptor
A Stripe statement descriptor is the text that appears on a customer's bank or credit card statement when they make a payment to a business through Stripe. It helps customers recognize the charge and identify the business they made the purchase from.
