Nurse's dashboard
Test task for healthcare startup
Test task for healthcare startup
As a nurse, Anna Smith wants to see a Dashboard that will display My Patients, activities in her nearest Schedule related to patients, To Do List, Planned Meetings. The dashboard should provide an opportunity to display information related to her activities for yesterday, today, tomorrow, week, other time period.
The schedule has to include 5 patients on treatment and 1 new patient with high-level detailed information about Diagnosis, Numbers of Day on treatment for each of patient.
She has been informed that a patient with the name Amanda Adams will be discharged during displayed time period. Also she has been informed about the latest metrics of patients like Temperature, Blood Pressure, Respiratory Rate, Pulse and notified that some of the metrics are out from normal range.
In To Do list she likes to view/check/add/edit/delete (if she has permissions) items like Nursing Handoff from other Nurse(s), Team Conferences, Daily Assessment for each of Patients with/without scheduled time.
In a Meeting List she’d like to see items like Nursing Handoffs, Team Huddles, Team Conferences and other types with/without location(room etc) and with/without time.
She’d like to have an opportunity to manage notification options for different types of items from a dashboard.
If you’ll have ideas how to improve her dashboard with better ideas, please provide them"
Technical requirements:
Tablet only, iPad2 (chosen by me)
Frequency of use:
Frequency is assumed 10-12 usage per day
Technical background:
Assume only the training to use the App on the tablet from the client as some people will only have this
A nurse is a person in a clinic, who cares for patients before, after and during a surgery. This person might be a woman, who do a lot of serve with patients and their relatives. So, she is always in a hurry. That's why dashboard should help to manage all activities and does not distract her.
The nurse usually does a lot of duties, so she will open dashboard just to review her schedule or to see some notification. Also, she should see a diagnosis for a current patient. The nurse would use a tablet on the go or during standing.
Design criteria for the UI design:
Be as simpler as possible
Doesn't have any distractions
Show main information on 1 screen
What a nurse could be looking for on a dashboard:
What is my schedule for today/tomorrow?
What will I do in the next 2 hours?
Which patient should I start from? Who will be the next?
What is the patient’s diagnosis?
Does anyone need my urgent help?
Do I have a meeting today?
What tasks do I have?
Section that should be shown:
List of patients linked to a timeline. The nurse should see every person and understand his/her condition. If they need she can see more information about each patient.
Current Todos / Activities related to patients / Meetings - could be shown on a timeline, so the nurse can see everything in one place
Todo's without time can be shown separately, so nurse could manage them
Notification settings
I’ve made a quick paper prototype to visualize my idea and check how it could look like.
1 version
Schedule takes the main place of the screen and shows current and following activities. There are two sections with Todos and Planned Meetings on the right side. To see more information about patient the nurse needs to tap on the user’s photo. I found that this version is not very useful and wastes a lot of space with an unimportant information.
2 version
I’ve optimized the Schedule and have made it wider. Also, I’ve added a planned meeting to the Schedule . Now it became more compact and easy. Under it I’ve shown the detailed information of the current patient, Todos and Planned meeting with more details.
3 version
I decided that information about a patient is more important than planned meeting, so I left in Schedule meetings only.
At the end I’ve kept more space for Diagnosis.
In this version the nurse could find all Schedule for a day with planned meetings and manage her todos.
4 version
I’ve tried to display a timeline as a column because of it is more usual and convenient. The idea was to make left column scalable depending on the patient selected. I’ve performed a small user test with my wife. I saw that this version also has some problems in scanning information and is hard to scale.
5 version (final)
I’ve learnt some new information about a nurse’s workday. I found that it is more important for her to see metrics of all patients, schedule, and task list, so everything is under her control. If nurse taps on a patient she would see detailed information about this patient.
So final prototype consists of three parts. There are My patients, Schedule (all events with time) and Tasks. “My patient” is shows 5 patients on a treatment and 1 new patient. A nurse could tap on anyone and see more information about the patient. The Schedule section has all events linked to a patient or a planned meeting. And in the Task user could find all the tasks for this day. A user could either add a task or mark the one as done.
Then I’ve made two variants for the landscape and portrait modes using the existing color scheme and style of UI elements
Finally, I get a nice and simple interface that works for different screen orientations and sizes.
I didn’t finish the screen with selected patient, adding a task and the notification settings. This solution could be improved in the future by adding more information to Schedule and Tasks.
