My Newest Purchases

A convenient and efficient way of organizing actions needed during zooms and podcast recordings and streams.

An adjustable laptop stand to get my screen up closer to my line of sight and improve my workflow. I got the black one.

Fantastic upgrade for my videos. A slightly shorter focal length, the 35mm comes out as a 50mm on my APS-C Canon R50

AUDIO

What I use and why...

Vocaster Two: This is my audio interface that lets me get clean audio. It lets me mix, edit, and record straight to my camera. That last item is the biggest selling point for me. I don't have to sync my audio or record a separate audio track. I simply plug the Vocaster into my Canon R50, hit record, and the audio records straight to the video. Super simple.

ATR2100X: I started off using it as a USB microphone, but then got the Vocaster and shifted to XLR. Great microphone. Is it a Rode? No. Is it less than $100 USD? Yes. The first thing one should get is a microphone. Maybe one day I'll upgrade, but not for a while. This microphone suits me for the Vlog, podcasting, Zooms, and anything else.

ATR2100X USB Microphone - uses either USB-C or XLR connections. Great way to start and has room to grow.

VIDEO

What I use and why...

Canon R50: I started off with the M50, but it didn't live up to everything it was supposed to do. Reasons to get the R50 over the M50 include it has built-in support for streaming. You don't need an HDMI converter or any extra app. All you do is select streaming in the menu, connect it with a USB-C 3.0+ cable, and you've got a webcam.

Canon RF-50mm f/1.8: I can't say enough good about this lens. BUT - my camera is setup over four feet from my face. Usually, the camera is a lot closer to the vlogger's face. This lens won't suit a traditional setup. However, if, like me, you're limited on depth of space and are looking for a longer focal length, you can't go wrong with the nifty-fifty.

Canon RF-24mm f/1.8: If I were doing a traditional vlog where the camera was closer to my face and there was some distance behind me to get that good background separation, I'd use this lens. On my M50, I have the 22mm and LOVE it. For the R50, they make this gorgeous little 24mm and it's on my wish list. It's a bit more but worth it.

OTHER

What I use and why...

Macbook Pro: I use the 2022 14 inch Macbook Pro with the M1 chip. You can get those way cheaper now then when I bought mine. But, if you're going to buy, consider the one you don't have to upgrade in a year. The M3 chip in the new Macbook Pro is absofrickinglutely amazing. I've invested in mine, so I'll keep it a while, but I envy anyone getting this.

Ipad Mini: This has been so fantastic. I run Teleprompter on it for my scripts. I use it to connect to my Canon R50. I use it to plan out my episodes. I use it to connect to my Macbook Pro to provide an efficient workflow. I've used it as my backup method of participating in vlog/podcast interviews. This is the thing you didn't know you needed.

Elgato Streamdeck Mini: I just got this and am still trying to figure out all the best ways to use it, but so far it's amazing. If I had the money and could do it again, I'd get the 15-key. If I ever do upgrade any of my equipment, that will be one thing I upgrade. The 6-key is just enough to do some things if I use folders, but the 15-key would be better.

WISH LIST

Gear and components I'm considering upgrading to...

These have a nice look, a built-in pop filter, are a bit more compact, and sound great. This is a great starter mic if you have the budget or a great upgrade mic if you're moving up from the $50 range to the $100 range.

Currently, I'm using a repurposed camera stand that is meant to be adjusted once. It's not a dynamic mount. This one is. This one allows me to move it as needed in the middle of a podcast/vlog. Simple and clean.

I intend to someday change up my "studio" setup. Right now I'm filming across my leatherworking table. When I build a proper vlog/podcast studio, I'll need a shorter focal length lens. On the R50, this equals a 38mm.

Eventually, I'll move up to a full-frame camera. I'm not a professional photographer, so this is what I've got my eye on.

Now that I've tried the mini, I wish I'd have spent the extra $50 and just got the 15-key Elgato Stream Deck Mk.2.

I want to get a monitor put up behind my canon R50 camera. Still looking into whether this will fit my needs but it looks good.
