Welcome to the Hasbro Boardwalk, where classic board games come to life! With the removal of Suess Landing, this board game centric land will become the designated "kids area" of Islands of Adventure. However, this does not mean the land will be any less immersive than Inkopolis or the DC: Harbor of Heroes.
When creating Islands of Adventure, Pharos recruited Mr. Monopoly to represent "ambition". However unlike the other five adventurers, Mr. Monopoly at first refused. Ever the capitalist, he saw no benefit in bringing his world to a theme park. That was until he realized it would be the ideal landscape for focus group testing. Yes, Hasbro would make this boardwalk their "test grounds" for all products and properties!
At the center of the land is a fountain and statue of Mr. Monopoly, representing his "great deeds". Little does Pharos know how much Mr. Monopoly stands to gain!
The statue proclaims, "Life is like a board game, you just have to keep rolling the dice."
This maritime shooting attraction combines “Aquatopia” technology with real WAR! Well actually no. They shoot foam balls. But still, WAR! Board miniature battleships on the queue (2 ½ minutes unlimited), or stay on land and fire from the turrets (costs a quarter for 12 balls). Inside your battleship or next to your turret is a point tracker that updates as you accurately hit targets or other battleships. Try to best your prior score!
This attraction can be found in an enclosed area of water, surrounded by a large net to prevent the battleships from firing back at the turrets; however, the rest of the space is covered in a pretty rock wall to prevent a "cage" like setting. This open environment allows for the battleships to crash, take cover, and do battle in an aquatic sandbox!
As a more thrilling addition to the land, a Wild Mouse coaster is added themed to a thrilling and zany board game on its own: Mouse Trap.
Guests enter the queue with the large cage balanced precariously above them looking like it could fall and catch the mice at a moment's notice.
After getting in the giant mouse car, guests are sent up the lift hill by a crank that looks identical to the one in the game.
Guests reach the top of the hill to discover it is the one in the game and while also pulling the guests to the top, it has triggered the boot and the marble has no been set free. A race to the end ensues!
Guests suddenly zip around the corner and weave back and forth following the marble down the stairs before taking a quick dip and climb to the next mable near the top.
Guests follow this one down a large curve slowly before a large dip as the marble falls out of the bathtub and hits the diving board.
The guests (and the diver) take a small incline before the diver lands on the pressure plate pool. The only problem now? It has activated the cage guests go under for the queue. If the mice cars don't make it out fast enough they'll get caught!
The cars go down another dip to increase speed making it under the cage just before it drops (a simulated drop. Slight shaking and a little movement but never really makes it close).
The mouse cars head back to the loading platform having successfully escaped Mouse Trap!
You won’t miss Candyland. A giant ice-cream-cone castle, with cones serving as the walls and ice cream scoops as the towers, graces the southern end of the land. Surrounding the castle are giant lollipops of various sizes and colors, and a small chocolate river (not colored water, but a solid painted to look liquidy). Along the meandering queue guests can find numerous candy-themed minigames.
Once inside the castle proper, guests are moved through a small cattlepen queue that can be expanded as needed depending on the day. There are cooling AC units inside to get away from the hot sun.
Guests board gingerbread ride vehicles with frosting and gum drop detailing. Each vehicle suits four guests, with two per row. With that we are off!
The story tells an original story (unrelated to the 2005 direct to DVD film) of the various Candyland characters preparing for a big party in Candy Castle. You’ll need to pass through the various lands fast if you want to make it to the party on time!
The first room is the Gingerbread Plum Forest. We can hear small gingerbread trees humming and dancing along, their mouths animated in unison. At the center of the room is Pumpy, the caretaker of the trees, who sings a special song:
Welcome welcome welcome
To Candy-Candy Land
I am Gloopy carer of plum trees
Read at your command
Welcome welcome welcome
To Candy-Candy Land
The King’s having a party
You best get there in a flash!
This leads to the second room, the Peppermint Forest. Mr. Mint stands guard here, chopping down peppermint trees in preparation for the king’s feast.
So yer here ey
The best of the best
Yer se here is me peppermint farm
The King says its the finest in er land
I give yer shortcut to get there sooner’
Don’t wanna be late ye junior!
This “shortcut” leads to Lord Licorice, the closest thing to a “villain” of the ride. He is holding out in his dark keep, surrounded by licorice minions. However while he wants to be intimidating, he ends up coming across more like a jealous little brother…
Vell vell vell
If it izn’t thee candyland friends
I have vou know
I no go to party
Vy? Because King Kandy is my rival!
You see thee invitation letters?
They are traps I tell vou
I no open them
Doesn’t matter if they say letz be friends
I am sure they are trapz!!!
After that silly encounter, we exit Lord Licorice’s castle and enter the Gumdrop Mountains, where Jolly the big gumdrop is waiting for us.
Oh this way this way!
My name is Jolly!
I’m quite prone to making Follies!
But trust me here this is a special way!
Don’t know what that fool Mint was thinkin’
That Licorice fellow is such a stinkin’!
We move through a steady pass in the Gumdrop Mountains… when everything starts to shake. Jolly shouts “oh no, oh no, I knew this was a bad idea! Folly Jolly!” and we speed us slightly to just get out of the gumdrop avalanche.
This takes us into the next room: the Peanut Brittle Farm. After passing through the quaint farm being plagued by two mischievous chipmunks, we find ourselves facing the friendly Gramma Nut and her dog Bazz.
Why hello there
Welcome to the Peanut Brittle Farm!
Here we get all sorts new experimentations
Sure to wow the entire nation!
Gramma Nut provides us with her new “Special Nuts” which cause the Gingerbread Cars to spin around. As we leave the farm, Bazz the dog barks us farewell. After the Farm is the Lollipop Woods. The adventure-seeking Princess Lolly is quick to greet us.
Oh oh!
Look at this!
New companions for my quest!
Follow me
We’ll be having lots o’ fun!
The carts speed us and subtly spin as we follow Lolly’s adventure through the Lollipop Woods. We go up and down little hills and past the many multi-colored lollipops. Eventually this path leads to the seventh room, the Ice Cream Sea. Queen Frostine sings a formal song -
Greetings, salutations,
You’re almost at the castle foundations!
But be careful,
You’ve had a good romp,
Just good luck getting through that swamp!
As threatening music plays we enter the final obstacle: the Molasses Swamp. The Gingerbread Cars move slower in this room and shake uncontrollably. Amidst the brown goo is Gloppy, a friendly blob in the molasses that animates back and forth as he sings:
Gloopa doopa
Gloopa doopa
King make the chocolate bar,
And I eat it all!
Gloopa doopa
Gloopa doopa
Don’t want to be slowing down
Or else you’ll get a frown!
We leave the Molasses Swamp and finally make it to Candy Castle: hopefully the length in the swamp didn’t make us late. Grand music plays as we take in the full sight. Passing through the gates, several gingerbread men congratulate us for making it just in time!
The final scene shows King Kandy’s feast. All sorts of candies are lined up on the table, and all the characters we’ve met on our journey are here… even Lord Licorice!
“Oh vell, I suppose vou veren’t my enemy after all”
--Lord Licorice
“Lord Licorice, welcome to Candyland!”
--King Kandy
Everyone sings together now:
Welcome to Candy-land!
Our sweet happy-land!
Welcome to Candy---Land!!!
Welcome to Candy---Land!!!
After this celebratory scene, we disembark from our gingerbread carts in King Kandy’s kitchen. We exit into the Candyland Can, a gift shop / sweets shop that sells both Candyland themed merchandise and real candy!
Welcome to JENGA DROP, the waterside dropper based on the popular tabletop game, Jenga. On JENGA DROP, guests “climb” a Jenga tower before seeing a block get pulled out that causes the tower to drop, bringing the guests down with it. Although this is a relatively simple ride type, it includes more advanced technology to make the effects convincing and improve the re-rideability factor for both children and adults. With this in mind, let’s take a tour of the attraction.
Entrance
The queue, a simple switchback, is designed to be an orange canopy held up by oversized Jenga blocks.
In this queue, guests can play virtual Jenga on screens on dividers between the switchbacks. At the end of each month, the guest with the highest score (based on levels stacked) will be honored with a Jenga brick at the base of the attraction having their name and score on it. It will serve as a physical, permanent scoreboard and a unique way to bring the guest experience literally into the world of Universal in a unique, personalized manner. The name will be a copy of the guest’s signature that they must give when their game is complete. In the case of shorter wait times, an additional two virtual Jenga stations will be added near the exit of the attraction so guests can play after the attraction or in lieu of riding the attraction.
As was previously mentioned, JENGA DROP is a relatively straightforward drop attraction, but with technological enhancements to bring it into the 21st century. As guests slowly ascend the tower in their vehicle, a narrator will fill them in on how Hasbro has been pushing the limits of building a Jenga tower, trying to find how tall it can actually be. The narrator explains that the guests are here to act as “friendly helpers” in balancing the tower so it can go higher. Once they get near the top, the technology takes over in telling the story.
The floor of the vehicles will be made out of a screen that appears to be completely glass. The screen will take in a live video feed of everything below the attraction, and at appropriate times, an animation of a block from the tower being removed will be superimposed onto the video feed. Below is a physical example of how this effect will be accomplished.
(This effect was accomplished by covering the bottom of the ride vehicle with cling wrap to illustrate the video feed from the bottom of the vehicle, and then drawing a block on it in Sharpie to show how the animated block would be superimposed on the feed.
To add some randomness to the attraction, up to 3 blocks can be removed randomly before the vehicles drop. All 4 vehicles will see the same image on each side of the tower. Each time a block is removed, but the vehicles don’t drop, they will drop a few feet before rising again and shake slightly, using technology similar to that in the seats of It’s Tough To Be A Bug where the seats will move synchronously with the feed “shaking” in the same way. When the final block is pulled out, there will be a final shudder before guests see the tower start to give way below them, as they fall quickly, seeing the ground rushing towards them (slower than in real life though, to enable more people to ride it).
At the end of the attraction, the guests will hear the narrator thanking them for being a part of this experiment before saying that the tower has been rebuilt to begin the test again.
Guests will exit through a “debris field” of fallen blocks, furthering the story that the guests actually did fall off of a crumbling Jenga tower
What's the best part about The Game of Life? The giant spinner of course! What better way to bring that game to a large scale than increasing that spinner size?
Themed just like the original spinner, guests can find the large handle in the middle of this flat top with the numbers painted on the floor.
To replace the spikes of the spinner, The Game of Life cars are put in allowing 6 guests per car. The "driver" of the car has a steering wheel to control the spin of the car as it goes around.
Think of it like the Strawberry carnival ride but covered and themed.
Setting: a large stage with low house lighting. On stage is a mock doctor’s office, including a table set up with Operation on it
Primary characters: Sam, the man being operated on. Doctor Oper Ator, who will be performing the surgery, comedic actor. Lindsey Miller, Dr. Ator’s nurse and the straight person in most of the comedy, clearly knows what she’s doing.
The show opens with Sam entering Dr. Ator’s office, complaining of symptoms like a brain freeze and butterflies in his stomach. The Dr. is eager to perform a surgery immediately, without any further examination, but Sam is wanting actual tests done. The Dr calls the nurse in to take Sam to get an x-ray. While the two of them are gone, the doctor explains that he’s been developing a new way to make surgeries easier, which is why he’s really wanting to do the operation. He shows us an Operation board, saying it’s a way for doctors to perform surgeries from the comfort and ease of their office. The more he talks, the more it seems like it’s a bad idea, but as he’s talking, Sam and the nurse return.
The nurse tells the doctor he needs to look at the x-rays. When he does, he’s flabbergasted and tells Sam that he has to go into surgery immediately. Sam protests, but the nurse drags him off-stage as Sam struggles before the nurse returns, saying that everything is ready for surgery.
A screen above the stage begins to show a live feed of the Operation board. The doctor lets us know that Sam’s body was scanned, and now he is controlling mechanical surgical equipment through the game. He starts, and as we can all see, he isn’t very good. He continues bumping the edges of the slots, causing Sam’s nose to light up and buzz. The nurse is freaking out because it’s clear the surgery isn’t going well, but the doctor assures everyone that he’s got it all under control.
The nurse rushes out and screams off stage. She says Sam’s nose is actually red and his hair is frizzy from the electric shocks… she pushes the doctor out of the way, saying he can’t do it. She tries but isn’t able to do any better, so she starts bringing children on stage to help with the operation. At this point, the doctor returns, saying he can help guide the kids. This is where the doctor and nurse have free reign for comedic improv. The show can be up to a half hour long depending on the improv, and the actors are encouraged to really play up the comedy.
Once all the pieces are removed from Sam, the doctor concludes the operation, and the kids are all returned to their seats. Sam is brought back on stage, thanking the doctor for taking care of him. The doctor explains what happens, and Sam starts freaking out before being escorted off stage by the nurse. The doctor ends the show thanking the kids for helping him and encouraging them to come back and assist on another operation soon!
Mr. Monopoly himself has arrived for an exclusive photoshoot! He’ll arrive from backstage driving his favorite luxury car, a giant scale-up of the piece from the game (think the cars in Cars Land). Once arriving at an open space next to the Monopoly Shop, he will disembark and split the crew into two lines: one for taking pictures in the race car, and another for taking pictures with Mr. Monopoly and his trusty advisor, the giant thimble (another replica from the game).
At the end of his photoshoot, Mr. Monopoly will ask where the thimble went. Mr. Monopoly offers $100 to anyone who finds the thimble, showing off a real hundred dollar bill to incite the crowd. Guests then have to find the thimble hiding in plain sight. Once someone accurately points out the thimble, Mr. Monopoly will invite them up to the front. He will push forward the real hundred dollar bill before suddenly swapping it with a $100 in Monopoly Money.
Welcome to the greatest playground at Universal Orlando. At 0.75 acres, the Chutes and Ladders play area has everything a child would want. For one, there are obviously many slides and ladders. There are also towers to climb and bridges to cross, and a giant Magic 8 Ball that will answer your every question. At the far end are giant checkers, chess, and connect four boards to play! Even if you're an adult, you'll be impressed by the scale and intricacy of this play area.
The Candyland Can serves two purposes. The first is as a gift shop to Candyland: the Ride. On one end of the shop, you will find exclusive merchandise themed to the Candyland board game and its many characters, plus a few colorful board games to take home.
The other side of the shop is a Candy store, filled with all sorts of sweets. A few are specifically created for this store, themed to the Candyland characters.
For an upcharge, you can create your own exclusive candy bar! Head over to the touchscreens in the middle of the store and select a Candyland character as your "guide". Add whatever you'd like to your bar and submit the order -- you will be alerted on your phone when the candy concoction is complete!
Welcome to Monopoly Housing Co.! Have you ever wondered what the inside of a Monopoly house is like? For the first time ever, we’re taking you inside a Monopoly house, where you can find all the board game merchandise of your dreams!
The exterior of the store will look like an actual Monopoly house; it will be entirely green, but there will be window advertisements for properties in Monopoly and other board games.
All employees will wear costumes themed to the property clusters in Monopoly. For example, an employee representing the Park Place/Boardwalk cluster would be wearing a more sophisticated, blue costume. A Mediterranean/Baltic Ave employee would wear a more “commonfolk” brown costume. The railroads would also be represented with a stylized train engineer costume.
The interior of the house will be relatively similar to a standard flagship theme park gift shop. It will have a mid-Atlantic, turn of the century theme, similar to that of the Boardwalk Inn at Walt Disney World Resort.
As the flagship store of a board game-themed land, Monopoly Housing Co. will sell a wide variety of Hasbro board games, ranging from the more popular to lesser known games. Additionally, it will sell a wide variety of board game merchandise, which you can find pictures of below:
The classic toy from the 50's, Mr. Potato Head was brought to the world with many Hasbro toys. Half the fun with Mr. Potato Head is the ability to take multiple parts and build your own Mr. Potato Head constantly changing the look.
To match being right on the water of this playful boardwalk, guests walk into a bright and colourful building with Mr. Potato pieces implemented into the building. Here, Mr. Potato Head can be dressed up as many Universal properties.
DC, Jurassic Park, Simpson, etc. can all be dressed into a classic Mr. Potato Head costume. Not sure which costume to pick? You can get additional costumes for an additional price
If you’ve been pinin’ for some dinin’, hop on over to the Hungry Hungry Hippo Shack, where we’ve got the food that’ll satisfy even the hungriest of hippos!
As the Hungry Hungry Hippo Shack is part of the entry to the land, it has a bright, colorful design and a menu that will appeal to most guests.
A small snack shack in the land also doubles (word score) as a place to play some Scrabble.
The booth as a whole is themed to an open scrabble box. Walking up, guests can see the menu is Scrabble boards blown up a little bit with large scrabble pieces.
The Scrabble Snack Shack is the perfect place to buy some fresh fruit, yogurt parfaits, ice cream treats, drinks, and more!
Although Candyland may be the de jure main attraction of Hasbro's Boardwalk, Clue: Mystery Dine In will certainly be the breakout de facto star. Though most of the land is designed primarily with children in mind, Mystery Dine In is an attraction that adults will be getting the most out of. We anticipate this encouraging even adults attending without children to come and visit the Hasbro Boardwalk.
Each of the ten rooms from the original game are included in the restaurant, each about the scale as on the board. There are tables set up in all the rooms and guests are randomly assigned to one. The hallways in between are cut and the house would have an open floor plan to avoid congestion.
Every hour and a half a set number of people are accepted. You all gather in the hall and meet the seven other attendees of the party: Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, and new character Detective Grey who just arrives nearly late. We are all waiting for the host, Mr. Boddy, to come down and formally welcome us... when Mrs. White goes up to check on him and finds our host dead!
Detective Grey deduces only those present at the house before the guests all showed up could have killed Mr. Boddy. Therefore, the guests and Grey are the only ones proven innocent, so they will have to solve the crime! Each of us are given "Clue" pamphlets to investigate the characters, the weapon, and the location.
In the meantime, we are seated at our tables. Guests can wander around and speak to the six suspects as they make their way around the house. They can also investigate the clues surrounding the weapons and locations. As they check possibilities off through the process of elimination, they are welcome to return to Detective Grey in the hall for advice. When guests feel confident about their answer they will deliver the completed form to the Detective.
At the 45 minute mark, the food is finished cooking and delivered to guests at their tables. They will now likely begin eating, however they are welcome to put in any last minute questions on their pamphlets. At the 55 minute mark, Detective Grey will announce it is time to hand in any incomplete pamphlets: even if you don't come to a conclusion, any wayward evidence will be helpful in the Detective's conclusions.
Exactly an hour after the murder, Detective Grey will use the papers he has gathered to make his/her conclusion. S/he calls out the suspect, who is arrested and sent off. What's so special is the murder, weapon, and location are entirely random, so you could keep coming back and find yourself solving different mysteries. One day, Miss Scarlet is murdering Mr. Boddy for replacing her with a younger actress five years ago and ruining her career, and she does so with a knife in the kitchen. Another day, Professor Plum reveals Mr. Boddy refused to pay for his graduate program, and so he shot him in the conservatory to gain the funds to continue learning. And a third day, Detective Grey unveils Colonel Mustard to have poisoned Mr. Boddy in the library and escaped through the window when Dr. Orchid points out that makes no sense, because the Colonel is too tall to fit through that window and he has said on multiple occasions he thinks poison is a coward's way of murder. Some fingers are pointed and then everyone realizes the evidence doesn't add up... Detective Grey must have committed the murder, and that was why they were running in last second!!!
As you can see, every dining is a different experience.
The restaurant remains open 20 extra minutes after the conclusion of the main storyline. The five cleared suspects continue to converse with guests, sharing tidbits of their past and having a good time. You are then asked to exit, as they need to clean up and prepare for the next party (which will consist of an alternating set of actors).
Detective Grey: Detective Grey is the only non-iconic character in the show. The character can be played by a man or a woman, dressed entirely in grey. Grey is a new member of the force, but he’s had veteran training, so he/she knows what he/she’s doing but also has the nerve to go against the grain of common detective work. He/she doesn’t know any of the characters, so he/she holds no biases. Grey is the main driver of the plot, ensuring that the mystery is solved before the conclusion of the meal.
Miss Scarlet: Miss Scarlet is anything but typical. She’s unpredictable and cunning. She comes across as a seductive femme fatale, who hurt you just as easily as she can charm you. Scarlet is a struggling actress, but she carries herself in a manner that would never suggest this. Everybody who knows her thinks she’s the talk of the town, but they don’t realize that she hasn’t had an acting job in five years, and desperate people tend to do desperate things. Scarlet has never met Mr. Boddy, but she acted in one of his favorite films. Scarlet is played by an attractive, thirty-something brunette, wearing a scarlet dress.
Colonel Mustard: Colonel Mustard is a British military man, although it is unknown whether he ever actually was a colonel. Since his retirement from the military, he has thrown himself into his passion of big game trophy hunting; however, rumor has it that he cut corners with the legality of his hunts, and a man of his renown cannot have his name being slandered. Mustard is shrewd and boisterous, often using his loudness to distract others from his maneuvering and intelligence. He knew Mr. Boddy from his foreign relations as part of the British military, but he never considered himself close to the man. He’s played by a middle-aged man wearing a yellow shirt and tan suit jacket.
Dr. Orchid: Dr. Orchid is a brilliant doctor, researching medicinal advancements. She’s shy but comfortable conversing with guests and characters alike. However, nobody can figure out her connection to Mr. Boddy. Throughout the meal, it is revealed that she was actually the long-lost daughter of Mr. Boddy, although she resents him for never taking care of her and her mother, Mrs. White. Dr. Orchid is played by a woman in her late twenties to early thirties, and she wears a deep pink pants and a black blouse.
Mr. Green: Mr. Green is quiet and unassuming. He may be one of the lesser known suspects for this reason. What little we do know about him is that he is French, and he may have been a reverend at one point. Guests will discover throughout the night that he was actually Mr. Boddy’s reverend years ago, but he left the job and hadn’t seen Mr. Boddy in ages. Why, then, did Mr. Boddy invite Mr. Green to the party? Mr. Green will be portrayed by a thirty to forty-year old man wearing a green polo shirt.
Mrs. Peacock: Mrs. Peacock is an older woman, wearing a blue dress and a dazzling set of pearls. She is a popular socialite, and everybody knows that she has a large fortune but nobody to spend it on. Throughout the meal, guests will notice different characters attempting to get into Peacock’s good favors, although Peacock seems content to be rich and alone. In another life, she was Mr. Boddy’s significant other, and it is still a mystery as to why they split and why he invited her back…
Professor Plum: Professor Plum is a young, up and coming professor. It is well-known that he is a physicist investigating different energy sources in Switzerland. When he was in college, he met Mr. Boddy at an open lecture. He and Mr. Boddy became great friends, and Boddy financed the remainder of Plum’s education. Plum is very confident, almost to the point of arrogant, but his quick wit and intelligence often support his arrogance. He’s played by a man in his late twenties to early thirties, and he wears a light purple button down.
We hope you enjoy Hasbro’s Boardwalk. Whether big or small, short or tall, you’ll find something to enjoy here!
