Teardrop
The teardrop area could be made safe with a concrete pathway which is wheelchair accessible from where the Porta-Potty location and parking area are adjacent to the playground. This would also allow children to ride their bikes and enjoy the view, and allow everyone to enjoy the view. The elderly and disabled can take breaks at benches located at the headway and the end of the trail. The end of the trail needs to be open enough to appreciate the canopies and the cliff side, or both, precariously teetering, all maintaining integrity. Some type of erosion mitigation would be needed along with new plantings to hold the cliffside in place. A series of wood bollards placed along the Gifford Park Drive would eliminate the off-roading and access to this roadway by cars and trucks. Either type of bollard, cable or cheap wood, like Fremont Park across the river in Iowa has, would be sufficient. If the cyclists could be diverted from Bellevue Boulevard and kept from the 13th Street right away, they might also venture down to the lookout. All of these different groups feeling safe would improve the area very cheaply, inexpensively and effectively. Honeysuckle at the headway along the forested area and the proposed pathway would also need to be cleared for SAFE. It will be reiterated in detail in Fencing section.
Maps are provided showing existing bicycle routes in Omaha from Google Maps. Also from Google Maps is a map showing proposed walkway and removal of honeysuckle, etc.
To complement this proposal a small section of pathway along the east side of 13th Street from the north entrance of Mandan to the north entrance of Mount Vernon Gardens would complete the entire bike trailway and alleviate the need for cyclists to take on the dangerous40 mile an hour traffic on 13th Street right away, thus making it safe. This is detailed on ma below. It will also be reiterated in detail for the Mount Vernon Garden SAFE proposal
Map Below:Yellow-alternate bike route taking cyclist off 13th shown Red Xs, however we would need small stretch of walkway shown Blue to complete bike route.
As shown on a map below
Red- proposed walkway location
Yellow -would be the new bicycle route taking cyclists off 13th R.O.W.
Blue would be the proposed cabled bollards
Orange-proposed benches... somehow the benches will need shade
