Dogs are social by nature. They thrive on companionship, competition and interaction. Day care & overnight care in a comfortable social setting helps them develop self confidence. The therapeutic affect makes them less likely to bark, bite or become fearful or aggressive. Allowing dogs the opportunity to socialize with other dogs is a vital purpose essential to their mental and physical well-being.
A dog that is left alone for extended periods will exhibit detrimental behaviors such as:
Aggression
Chewing
Defecation / Urination
Depression
Loss of Appetite
Many dogs are simply bored, meaning they aren’t getting enough exercise, playtime, potty breaks, mental stimulation or social contact. Letting dogs have free-time to interact with other dogs and humans of all ages is one of the most important things responsible dog owners can do to improve impulse control and diffuse obsessive behaviors.
Another common reason for home alone problems is noise phobia. If a dog is afraid of thunder, fireworks, construction sounds or other loud, startling noises, it may react by trying to get away from the sounds, resulting in destructive behavior. It may also howl or bark, or become so anxious it will lose bladder or bowel control.
If separation anxiety is the problem, the dog will panic when left alone. The dog will exhibit the problem behavior on a regular basis, not just some of the time as bored dogs tend to do. Social therapy can help reduce the need for anxiety medications. It can help diagnose appropriate dosage levels.
