Change in Space Over Time

In the early 19th century, many wealthy Europeans traveled to the Bay of Angels during the winter months. This helped the city economically and build its reputation. After a poor harvest season in 1821, Reverend Lewis Way raised money to build the walkway to give jobs to those that were out of a job. The walkway was completed three years later in 1824 and named "Camin des Inglés" . In 1860 the name was changed to its current title of La Promenade des Anglais. This marked the beginning of the cultural period "Belle Epoque", which brought great technology and economic advancements. The city built luxury hotels, casinos, and theaters for the visitors it was attracting during the winter season [4].
