The Eye Drive was one of our most impactful initiatives, seamlessly combining education and direct community action to raise awareness about eye care and provide free vision assistance to 48 individuals across the Tampa Bay area. After learning that approximately 15% of people with an annual income under $20,000 experience visual impairments, compared to just 6% of those earning $55,000 or more, we recognized a significant disparity in access to vision care. This alarming statistic prompted us to launch the Eye Drive to help address this gap and make vision care more accessible to underserved communities.
To maximize our impact, we set up donation boxes at libraries, schools, clinics, and high-traffic events, including the South Asian Diwali Summit, which contributed nearly 30% of the glasses we collected. We encouraged individuals to donate unused glasses they no longer needed, making it easy for people to participate and contribute to the cause. Alongside these efforts, we worked tirelessly to raise awareness about preventable vision loss and its profound effects on individuals' quality of life.
The Eye Drive became not just a collection campaign, but a powerful call to action. It inspired our community to recognize the importance of eye care and the difference that donating a simple pair of glasses could make in someone's life. By working together, we were able to provide crucial support to those in need, while also spreading knowledge about the preventable nature of many vision impairments. This initiative was a testament to the collective power of community and the difference it can make when we come together to address an urgent need.
