Project Unity is a peace project and organization dedicated to supporting immigrant and refugee youth in the Charlotte area by fostering a sense of belonging, increasing English language skills, improving acculturation, and building unity across different backgrounds. Students engage in peer to peer activities with fellow high school students to pave the way for meaningful relationships while having a safe space to foster conversations.
The students in this program are brought together from all backgrounds and countries including Syria, Myanmar, Nepal, Eritrea, the Congo, and many others. Participants in the program have a wide range of English Language skills, some fluent, some still learning, and others have none at all but it is amazing to see language is never a barrier to create friendship and peace. Some of the most successful activities have been a soccer clinic, capture the flag, creating vision boards, card games, trivia, and cake decorating. These activities led to natural conversations regarding school, hobbies, and personal life. As group leaders we recognize and celebrate these success, but not shy away from struggles and difficult conversations that students share.
