According to a new data reported by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, young voters (18 - 24 years old) voted at double the rate they did in 2014 midterm elections.
In Utah specifically, voting increased from 8.1% to 16.8%.
While this voter turnout wasn't greater than the overall electorate increase, it does signal that more young people are voting. Utah was among eight states in the study (which included 34 states) that did not have a youth surge greater than that of the greater electorate, meaning more action is necessary to compare with the rest of the country.
Going forward, more emphasis has to be given to registering young voters, ideally in high school government courses. To find more information on registering to vote in Utah, see our Voter Registration page!
