How to Read the Cultural Map

To explore different aspects of the fishing community and its relationship with the Penang South Islands (PSI) reclamation project, follow these steps:


Opening the Map Layers

  1. Click on the map to open it.

  2. In the top-left corner of the map, click on the Layers icon (it looks like a stacked square).

  3. A list of layers will appear. Click the checkboxes to toggle specific layers on or off.


To follow the journey of the fishermen while they are out at sea, enable these layers:

  • The Fishing Journey

  • Reference Points for Navigation

  • Fishing Spots (Dark green = Jan 2024, Light green = Aug 2024)


To understand more about the PSI reclamation project and its effects on the fishermen, enable these layers:

  • Proposed Islands

  • Land Reclamation


The PSI reclamation project is not the first instance of state-led development affecting the community. To see other past developments, enable these layers:

  • Housing

  • Mosque

  • Plantations


To learn more about key locations in the daily lives of the fishermen, enable this layer:

  • Important Locations


To see how the fishing community connects to South Penang’s food industry, enable this layer:

  • Udang Restaurants (showing restaurants that serve prawns in the area)
