What have you achieved this week?
All are band members started to indavualy writing our song. so This week i began thinking of ideas for a basic rhythm section to my song and recorded a video using my phone.
Here a video of the first rendition of the song on drums.
I also managed to get an audio sample for a second version of the song. This rendition in my opinion was the better version of the two, so hopefully I'm going to show this to my bandmates.
Here is an audio clip of the second rendition on drums.
I managed to rehearse the song with Oscar this week and recorded. It was very helpful to have a guitarist who could write parts that fit so well into a song. We came up with many ideas and even recorded some audio clips of some of those ideas. This is something i should do more often. I feel because I managed to actually make progress in writing my song.
Here is a video of that rehearsal.
For this week we decided it was time to start recording our songs using the studios in college. We decided to do Toms song first. He had already tracked the song out himself at him. So all we needed to do was record real drums. The only mishap was that i had not learnt the song at all. But i had heard it enough times to know how most parts were played.
This week i also came up with a new variation of drum micing. Using the same setup as before (seen in my production blog) But instead of using Sennheiser NT1A as overheads, i used two AKG C1000. The way the mics are constructed makes for a more clear sound that focuses on a tighter area, like a shotgun mic.
Week 3
This week we rehearse our setlist more on the main stage. I managed to record a video of our rehearsal and i can say my self, that we hav greatly improved as a band
We used a different studio today. This studio has a different drum kit which is slightly better than the Tama superstar in terms of sound. The premier kit has more toms, is made of nice wood and there is even a double tom stand.
I decided to use the stand to create a setup that i have always dreamed of having myself. By moving the bass drum towards the right side, i am able to play better with my right foot because i am in a better position to play double bass. In a way, this setup mimics the idea of having two bass drums.
I also decided to use a different mic for the floor tom. last time when using the dynamic sm57 on the floor tom, i noticed it wasn't picking up very well. as if the lower frequencies had been cut off. So i tried using a dynamic mic meant for more Bassy tones and it worked much better.
I got both these ideas from watching a certain YouTube video by Alex Rundinger.
Week 4
On 17th may this year, we decided to look for a studio outside college. All of as had managed to buy some new gear recently and were looking for a place to test out the gear together without distractions or outside forces. There are 2 studios in my local area, both of which i have been to. I thought that Tazma would be the best as it has a great price, the rooms are fitted-out with amazing gear and they have AC. I can definitely say that we would go again. Mainly because there was nothing limiting us that day.
We were able to crank the amps and hit as hard as we could and nothing would stop us. That day we also recorded multiple videos with different camera angles. We filmed it all on our phones and edited it into a video for YouTube.
This was the last week of practicing until the gig we had on the 25th. We have completely perfected our setlist and we all feel very confident that this gig will be our best yet. We have also been green lighted to bring our own gear which we are all very excited about. We had spent a lot of time saving up for all of it, and we finally got to use it all properly.
