Kia ora and welcome to my 'Whats on Top'.
My name is Rachelle (Rachel) and this is my place to share what I get up to as the ECE Across School Lead for Whakaoriori Kāhui Ako.
I will share the progress I make each term and the fun I get up to while being out and about in our community.

I spent the first few weeks learning about our Kāhui Ako and meeting lots of new faces.
This is where we get all the agencies in the room to help formulate and develop what they would like to see in our 'Transition to School Form'.
I enjoyed meeting and getting to know everyone, and what they have accomplished so far.
Each term I get to write a 'Spot Light' on a centre which goes into our 'Whakaoriori Kāhui Ako' newsletter. I started with my centre, 'Cole Street ELC' as my first post.
3hr Hui
This was my first large 3hr WSL meeting.
We had a guest speaker from the Ministry of Education.
We had a 'School Gem' shared from St Matthews School.
Evan and I held our first long session for our 'Progressions' Work Stream.
Who knew I could achieve such a thing!
This term Lauren my ASL friend, sent me in the right direction and gave me a few pointers on how to create and develop a website for our 'Progressions' work stream.
I was inspired after visiting her 'Wairarapatanga' website.
And what fun I had!
What a journey I have been on learning all about the different ways to use google Drive, Slides and Doc's!
This is where we as a Kāhui Ako get to share with our leaders in all the education sectors 'whats on top' and listen to any feed back.
Here I got to meet up with a few of my lovely ECE Kaiako.
I sent out an my introduction letter to all ELS in Whakaoriori.
'REAP Wairarapa' organise our 'Transition to School' Meetings that are held once a term.
This is where Kaiako from ECE and Primary can come together, to learn about each others space and get to know one another.
This term it was held at 'York Street Kindy'.
Thanks team for hosting all of us.
I was keen to build some knowledge on how 'Works Streams' ran a meeting. So I attended 'Wairarapatanga' termly week 7 hui.
I was so inspired by our 'Wairarapatanga' work stream, that I now attend regularly and take part in the mahi.
What is Pepeha/Mihimihi
Many of our tamariki are supported and encouraged to develop a Mihi at their Early Learning Centre or Kura around Whakaoriori.
Learn; as I did the difference between Pepeha and Mihimihi.
As a centre, let Nathan Riki inspire and motivate you and your team to develop and write your own powerful Pepeha or Mihimihi.
Videos are shared from 'Wairarapatanga' Work Stream Website
Gareth Sinton Principal at Douglas Park School and Trudy Sears; School Liaison from REAP House, designed an amazing 'Teacher Only Day' programme for our Whakaoriori Primary Teachers.
As Kāhui Ako Leaders we were invited to attend. Thank you Gareth and Trudy, such an amazing event!
This was an amazing day that encouraged our Primary School community to learn and work together.
Be in the room together; be inspired; and be motivated to foster agency in their kura and classroom.
I attended two speakers Jase Williams the former Principal of 'Henry Hill School' in Napier and certified trainer in the 'Neurosequential Model in Education'. And award winning Wellbeing advocate Jaz Te Putu.
Jase is an MOE Accredited Facilitator in Trauma Informed Practice and also a trainer in the Neuroseuential Model in Education. Follow him on Instagram at traumainformednz
Jase encouraged us to watch and reflect on a few powerful videos.
My ELC 'Cole Street' ,watched 'The Power of Words' at a staff meeting. It provoked some amazing discussion and inspired us as Kaiako and Parents.
Please take time to watch.
At the age of six, Sala Tiatia experienced domestic violence for the first time. It was the verbal abuse however, that bought the most darkness to Sala’s internal world—until one particular English class, with one particular English teacher, turned Sala’s dark world around. In this compelling and emotional talk, Sala shares the words that bought light to his world and how he speaks light into the world of some of New Zealand’s most vulnerable young people

I enjoyed visiting Opaki School and being introduced to all the teaching team and ākonga there; learning about their 'Gems' and meeting the New Entrant Team.
1hr Hui
This was a great hui with our Kaiako from across all sectors.
We touched base with our local Public health nurses, and 'Trust lands Trust' asked what we need funding for in our community.
I shared in celebrating alongside others
Pahutakawa ELC
'Enviro School' silver medal win.
We also listened as Hella from 'Forest School' shared her story telling inspirations with us.
This term I attended a life changing and thought provoking Te Tiriti course, facilitated by our very own Amy Williams and Lauren Tauveli from Whakaoriori Kāhui Ako,
where they took us on a journey of our history our treaty.
Very powerful and moving.
I encourage all my ECE whanau to attend and go!
1 hour WSL Meet

Thank you to Rosie and the team!
We learnt about what transitioning into their space looks like and how they use the play based learning approach, along with a host of other awesome mahi they do with their tamariki, whanau and community.

3rd August
This hui has been going for 15 years, and its purpose is to bring together ECE and New Entrant kaiako. They work on shared goals and aspirastions for their community of tamariki, whānau and kaiako.
It is really well run, and I am looking forward to gaining insight on how I can get this kind of net working hui working for us here in Whakaoriori.
Thankyou again to Jodi and the team at Whānau Manaaki for inviting me and making me feel so welcome. Just beautiful whanaungatanga.
This is the flyer that went out in emails and on FB
The dream for our community of ECE kaiako is getting us gathering together regularly. A place where we will
share and discuss what our tamariki and whānau need from us,
a place to provide PD to fill up our cup professionally and personally to inspire us as teachers and
a place to work towards our Masterton wide 'transition to school form'.
Wednesday 13th September
What a fantastastic turn out of 19 kaiako from ECE, learning support and kindergarten.
We shared and discussed our aspirations for what could go on a Masterton wide 'transition to school form'.
We talked and wrote down our dreams for what we need as kaiako for professional development.
We also had some professional development, hearing from Nathan Riki around Māori forms of giftedness.
He gave each centre the challenge of looking at our tamariki through the lens of one of the gifts each month. I look forward to seeing what this may look like in each centres space.
Each teacher was asked to individually write on post it's, there idea's on what they would find valuable to share on a 'transition to school' form.
Again each teacher was asked to individually write on post it's, there aspirations for what professional development they wish to have.
These activities sparked lots of vibrant and valuable discussions.
What an amazing time I had watching our community talk and work together for the needs and aspirations of our tamariki.
I learnt about what transition looks like across their spaces and how a whānau lead school can support a community that thrives.
