Principles of Computer & Data Sciences

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

Experience: No coding experience necessary

Date: June 19th - 23rd

Time: 12:30pm - 3:30pm

Cost: $125

Outcomes:

Understand the applications of programming and the different sectors of computer and data sciences
Write basic code in Python to perform automated tasks relevant to data analysis
Construct basic queries in an open-source database SQL server
Create data visualizations in Tableau based on data collected by each participant
Explain the data analytics process from data collection, cleaning, and manipulation to visualizing and interpreting data to make thoughtful insights

Michael is an incoming third-year student pursuing his academic career at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from John Curtis in 2021. He is currently enrolled in Northeastern's Honors Program, where he is studying Management Information Systems, Communication Studies, and Data Science. Notably, the program Michael is part of is among the top 10 rankings in the nation, providing him with the opportunity to learn from the leading experts and professors in his field.

Trey is an incoming Senior currently attending John Curtis Christian High School in New Orleans. He is currently in John Curtis's Honors Program, and more notably, has taken all computer science classes at JCCS, including AP Computer Science. Trey is currently on track to graduate in the spring of 2024 and plans to major in Computer Engineering or Computer Science in college.

The Logistics

How the heck does a coding camp work?

Don't worry, each participant will be well-taken care of. Instructors work closely with each participant, making sure they are making the most of their time & efforts. All aspects of the program will be guided step-by-step. From accessing the Editor to writing each program, there will be no shortage of support.

Where do I write my code? Wait. Do I have the right technology for a camp like this?

No need to worry. Come with a device that can access the internet, and you are all set. Each participant will need an active Google Account to access the FREE softwares used throughout the camp. Learn more about the specific technology requirements for each program.

Google Colab

Google Colab will be the Python editor used throughout the program. Colab is a FREE editor allows anybody to write and execute arbitrary python code through the browser, and is especially well suited to machine learning, data analysis and education.

*Tableau

Tableau is a visual analytics platform transforming the way we use data to solve problems—empowering people and organizations to make the most of their data.

*StackExchange

Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for database professionals who wish to improve their database skills and learn from others in the community. In the program, we will use StackExchange's open source database to practice querying a database.

FAQs

Do I need coding experience?

Nope! Come with a computer and enthusiasm to code, and you will be all set!

Note that there are different programs for different ages. START Programming is designed for 5th-8th graders while Principles of Computer & Data Sciences is designed for high schoolers.

If you are a 5th-8th grader and feel that you have the necessary skills to participate in Principles of Computer & Data Sciences, reach out to Michael and ask more about the programs to see which fits best for your interests.

I already registered and want to pay early, how do I do that?

Visit the JCCS Business Office to drop of a cash or check (check made out to JCCS with memo saying "Programming for Everyone".

What technology do I need?

For each program, all you need is a device (limited to a Chromebook, MacBook, or Windows laptop) and an active Google account.

How long is each program?

~3 hours per session

START Programming: 9am - 12pm

Principles of Computer & Data Sciences: 12:30pm - 3:30pm

How do I pay?

Three forms of payment are accepted: cash, check, or online payment to JCCS

The participant is going from 8th grade to 9th grade. Which program should I do?

Totally up to you! If you want the participant to learn the basics of Python and its application to real-world scenarios, but not sure if they want an extra challenge, START Programming would fit best.

If the participant is looking for a bit more of a challenge and wants to design a full-lifecycle coding project and gain practical skills beyond just coding, then Principles of Computer & Data Sciences would be the better option.

You cannot go wrong with either!

Does the participant need to bring anything besides a computer?

A COMPUTER CHARGER!

Other than that, not necessarily. But it is recommended to bring water and a snack or two!

I don't go to John Curtis, can I still attend the camp?

In-person programming is open to students from all schools & educational backgrounds.

I want to attend online. What do I need to do?

Amazing! This is a great option to learn new skills from the comfort of your home! When you register initially, select the option where you prefer to attend online. Before the start of the camp, you will be sent an email with instructions on how to attend via online.
