Length: Approximately 60 minutes
Description: This program is geared toward tweens and teens. Participants will create a variety of items to pamper themselves in a spa-like experience.
Activity: Staff will set up stations for participants to create their own spa items. These stations will include Bath Fizzies*, Hand and Face Scrub, Foot Scrub, and Shower Poufs*. Participants can make whichever of the projects they're interested in. If time and supplies remain, they can make extra to keep or give. Depending on the space available for the program, staff can opt to create a spa-like atmosphere with soothing music, mood lighting with battery-opted candles, and cushy chairs. Staff should also have books on hand to check out for any participants interested in learning more about beauty, skin care, and wellness.
Silicone molds (at least one for each participant - they will take them home)
Bowls (at least one for each participant at each station)
Food coloring in assorted colors
Essential oils in a variety of scents
Nylon netting (aka tulle)
Small containers with lids to store made items
Soothing music CD and CD player (optional)
Battery-operated candles (optional)
*Instructions for Bath Fizzies can be found in the book Smithsonian Maker Lab, and instructions for the shower poufs can be found in the book Bathe, Buff, and Beautify.
Modification of the Program: This program can be modified depending on available time. For a shorter program, reduce the number of projects completed. For a longer program, offer participants the opportunity to create additional projects with added scents. You can also add additional projects, such as: simple pedicure slippers and nail polish designs (instructions can be found in the book Bathe, Buff, and Beautify), or an Oatmeal Face Mask. Be advised that additional supplies will be required for added projects. To extend the program, staff can also have pre-made beauty items, such as nail polish and hair accessories, on hand for guests to pamper themselves on the spot.
Marketing: This program should be advertised in a library newsletter, on the library calendar, and with flyers posted within the library. Encourage library non-users to attend the program by also posting the flyer on community bulletin boards around town, such as at local businesses and local youth program facilities. If school is in session, partner with local schools to have the program flyer distributed to middle and high school students.
Supplemental information or sites: Sites abound that can offer additional ideas for spa parties, or offer wellness tips. Some suggestions are: DIY Spa Party Ideas from Better Homes & Gardens and Beauty Tips from Self Magazine. Use these ideas to add to the ambiance or offerings during the program, or to create take-home informational flyers for participants.
