Professional Engineering Roles
Jonathan is a Warranted Mechanical Engineer who graduated with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering Honours n 1989. For 3 years he worked with the Maltese Water Authority, where he was responsible for the introduction, management and application of CAED systems used in designing the Reverse Osmosis plants at Cirkewwa and Pembroke. During this period, he also formed part of a mathematical modelling team that developed a computer-based model of the Maltese water aquifer based on a finite difference approach.
Jonathan is the founder and CEO of MECB Ltd. an entity well established at the EU Level in fostering Growth & Competitiveness through Technological Innovation. Through its employees, MECB transfers knowledge in various ways on a rangeng of technological solutions including CAD, Augmented & Virtual Reality, Industry 4.0, Circular Economy, 3D-Printing across a number of countries including Iceland, UK, Italy, Belgium, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Greece, Spain, Czech, Slovenia and many others. Due to its effective contributions, MECB has been accepted to be part of the EU's Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition.
Ing. Borg also provided his engineering expertise as a Consultant and Trainer to Malta University Services Ltd between 1989 – 2008. Through this role he trained many engineers, architects and interested individual in both 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensonal Computer Aided Design. This role with MUS included work assignments abroad including Surrey (UK), Basel (Switzerland), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Kuwait City (Kuwait);
Prof. Borg is a member of the Institute of Engineering Designers (UK) , the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (USA), The Design Society (UK) and the Chamber of Engineers (Malta).
In May 2003, he was awarded a Medal of Appreciation for contributions made to the Institution of Engineering Designers (UK) as Malta’s Branch Secretary during a prestigious ceremony held at the House of Commons in London, UK.
In November 1990, whilst employed as an engineer with the then Water Works Department, I was awarded a one month Commonweath Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) scholarship to perform industrial training in CAD/CAM techniques at Hong Kong Polytechnic, Hong Kong;
Served for over four years on the 'Research, Technology, Development and Innovation (RTDI) Committee' of the Malta Chamber of Commerce Enterprise and Industry.
Jonathan C. Borg has held various official Government management board appointments including: MCAST Board of Governors , Governor on Malta's first Technology Venture Fund, The Malta Standards Authority; The National Commission For Sustainable Development; The Malta Council for Science & Technology; Chair of DesignMalta; The Malta Government Student Scholarship Board ; STEPS scholarships board; Creative Economy Working Group (CEWG) in the Ministry of Finance, Economy & Investment; Malta's Engineering Profession Board ; The Malta Enterprise Business Technology Network (BTN); Malta's Manufacturing Research Steering Committee (MCST)
Acted for several years, as Malta's National Contact Point for the EU FP6/FP7 thematic area on Production Technologies, Materials and Nanotechnologies (NMP).
International Professional Work Appointments
Has annually assisted since 2005, the European Commission, the Resarch Executive Agency (REA) and the European Research Council (ERC) as expert evaluator of research proposals valued at millions of Euro each. Panels/areas covered include: Regional Potenial (Regpot), RTD for SMEs, Internet of Things, Marie Curie ITNs, Future Emerging Technologies (FETS), Digital Factories, Internet of Things.
Has acted as independnt expert reviewer of on-going Research Projects under the EU's FP6, FP7 and recently H2020.
Has acted as independt expert evaluator for research proposals submitted to the Romanian National Research Council.
Has acted as independt expert evaluator for research proposals submitted to the Polish National Research Council.
Has been appointed as opponent to PhD candidate at KTH Technical University in Stockholm, Sweden
In July 2014, Prof. Borg visited CERN in Geneve as an expert reviewer appointed by the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission for the FP7 Edusafe project. This project focused on research into the use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) during planned and emergency maintenance in extreme industrial environments.
