In August 2024, the UK Patent Office granted a patent to a team involving Prof. Jonathan Borg that designed and prototyped a novel medical device by which to carry out a minimally invasive surgery to the thyroid gland, in such a way as to avoid an external visible scar.
In May 2024, Prof. J. C. Borg had the opportunity to chair one of the sessions at the prestigious Design2024 Conference held in the town of Cavtat, Croatia. It was an honor for him to guide discussions among brilliant researchers in the field that contribute to the advancement of design innovation. Whilst there, a paper co-authored by him and a PhD candidate he is supervising was presented entitled 'An AI-based Prosthesis Framework Fostering an Adaptive Amputee Healthcare Service.'

In Dec 2020, Prof. Borg as part of an interdisciplinary team consisting of Dr Christian Camenzuli, Prof. Pierre Schembri Wismayer, Prof. Jean Calleja Agius, Ing. John Paul Borg and Josef Attard was awarded the 2020 Intellectual Property Award for Scientific Initiative in addition to being recognised by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The medical research team members came up with the novel surgical procedure whilst the engineering team designed and prototyped the novel surgical tool facilitating this surgery.

In May 2015, Prof. Dr. Ing. Jonathan C. Borg hosted the first week of the 2015 International PhD Summer School on Integrated Product Development (IPD). This event was co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Ing. Sandor Vajna Chair of Information Technologies in Mechanical Engineering at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg. A total of 11 PhD candidates (see below) coming from Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Lebanon and Tunisia have partici-pated. The second week of this summer school will be held in September in Magdeburg. The IPD Summer School is an event endorsed by the international Design Society.
Prof. Dr Ing. Jonathan C. Borg was appointed as an expert evaluator by the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission to assess engineering research proposals in a number of calls including Marie Curie International Training Networks and Future Emerging Tech-nologies (FET). He has also assisted the Polish Research Agency with the evaluation of nation-ally funded projects. In July 2015 he was appointed as expert reviewer for the FP7 ECCO-MATE project concerning Experimental and Computational Tools for Combustion Optimization in Marine and Automotive Engines.
In May 2015, the new Council of the Malta Chamber of Commerce Enterprise & Industry re-appointed Prof. Dr Ing. Jonathan C. Borg as a member of its RTDI committee.
Prof. Dr. Ing. Jonathan C. Borg has in the last twelve months been active as a member of the Scientific Committee of a number of International Conferences including: DesignEd Asia held in Hong Kong December 2014, the International Conference on Research into Design held in India January 2015 and the International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED2015) being held in Milan Italy in June 2015. In addition, he has been appointed as Chair of the session on emotional design entitled "Design for a Contented Life" being held at ICED2015.
In April 2015, Prof. Dr. Ing. Jonathan C. Borg visited Fraunhofer IAO in Stuttgart concerned with research for industrial engineering. This visit forms part of on-going close collaboration taking place be-tween DIME and IAO through the joint PhD supervision of Ing. Francalanza by Prof. Dr. Ing. Jonathan C. Borg and Prof. Carmen Constantinescu. This initiative sees DIME and Fraunhofer collaborating on factory planning and in particular manufacturing system design supporting a range of products.

In November 2014 he was appointed by Research Executive Agency of the European Commission as an expert reviewer to make an on-site case-study inspection in Barcelona of the FP7 project CALIPSO concerning research into the internet of things for critical infrastructures, smart toys and smart cities.

In July 2014, Prof. Borg visits CERN in Geneve as an expert reviewer appointed by the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission for the FP7 Edusafe project. This project focuses on research into the use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) during planned and emergency maintenance in extreme industrial environments.
