1st Semester - 2026β2027
Electrical Control of Industrial Mechanisms (ECIM)
The Electrical Control of Industrial Mechanisms course provides a comprehensive, applied study of how electric motors and modern power-electronic drives are selected, controlled, and automated to perform the mechanical work of industry. It covers motor selection criteria, the control of centrifugal fluid machines (pumps, fans, compressors), the four-quadrant automation of vertical transport (elevators, extractors, and mine hoists), the multi-axis control of overhead cranes, and the synchronised control of continuous transport mechanisms (conveyors, escalators, and large integrated machines) β concluding with cross-sector case studies and a capstone mini-project.
Prerequisites: To fully benefit from this course, students should have a solid foundational understanding of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Electromechanical Control, Automatic Control theory (closed-loop feedback, PID), and basic numerical programming (e.g., Python or MATLAB).
Downloadable Course Materials:
π 1. Lectures Booklet : This primary textbook contains the theoretical foundations, worked derivations, and industrial application examples for each class of mechanism covered in the course. It includes a comprehensive nomenclature list of all symbols, acronyms, and equations used throughout. [Doc Link] - [Slids links : Ch1 Ch2 Ch3 Ch4 Ch5 Ch6]
π 2. Tutorial Exercises : Designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, this booklet provides analytical exercises β nameplate analysis, motor selection, schematic analysis, drive and braking-resistor sizing, load-sharing design, and fault analysis. Students must work through these calculations to prepare for the software simulations in the lab. [Doc Link]Β
π 3. Lab Works Manual : This hands-on manual offers guided simulation tasks. Students will use Python or MATLAB to build, test, and analyze the motor, drive, and control models developed in the lectures β from torque-speed curves and VFD/PID pump control to four-quadrant elevator profiling, crane braking and anti-sway response, and multi-motor conveyor load sharing. The manual outlines the procedures and critical questions students must answer by generating their own code and results. [Doc Link] [Link 2]
π 4. Tutorial Solutions : This companion document contains the step-by-step solutions for all tutorial exercises. (Note: You can choose to post this immediately, or hold it back and post it on the site later in the semester after students have submitted their own attempts!) [Doc Link]
2nd Semester - 2026β2027
The Electrical Control Techniques course provides a comprehensive and rigorous study of modern variable-speed electric drives. It focuses on the mathematical modelling, analysis, and control of Alternating Current (AC) machines, with a strong emphasis on practical control strategies such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for Induction Machines and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM).
Prerequisites: To fully benefit from this course, students should have a solid foundational understanding of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Automatic Control theory, and basic numerical programming (e.g., Python).
