Dr. Yara L. Jaffe R.

Full Professor

Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM)

Alternate director

Núcleo Milenio de Galaxias (MINGAL)

I am a profesional astronomer with a background in physics.

I am a faculty member at the Physics Department of Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria (USM) in Valparaiso, Chile, and I am originally from Venezuela.

My time is split between undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in astrophysics, and research in the area of extragalactic astronomy. Although I'm interested in a broad range of topics, the bulk of my research focuses on understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies as a function of cosmic time and environment. In particular, most of my recent work has been dedicated to understand the physical processes removing gas from galaxies in clusters.

I am co-PI of the CHANCES (CHileAN Cluster galaxy Evolution Survey) 4MOST survey, and alternate director of the Millennium Nucleus for Galaxies MINGAL which is connecting galaxy evolution studies across redshifts, environments and disciplines.

I teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses and I am also currently coordinating outreach activities at the Physics Department at USM.
