Colleges are intended to be a beacon of learning, opportunity, AND community. Institutions of higher education tend to sometimes neglect the last component as we get wrapped up in our difficult academic subjects. Additionally, large institutions often struggle to explore spaces in which the students tend to spend their time in, primarily because they lack the resources to support them. This is PGCC's current Vision Statement:
"Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) is the region’s premier center for dynamic teaching and learning, strategic partnerships, and community engagement that advances knowledge, economic equity, and lifelong personal development. "
I believe this contribution has significantly enhanced PGCC's sense of Community, and the opportunity remains for this endeavor to continuously grow in the future.

In early 2023 at PGCC, there was a huge void in the world of gaming. I sought to develop a perpetual community based club/organization centered around gaming for people of all intentions (social/competition/learning/etc.) I aimed to incorporate this endeavor with the college’s offices, facilitate events, host an online networking platform, and spread the word. Gaming represents a multi-billion dollar industry, which is largely centered around STEM and creativity. Students will have the opportunity to use something they love as a tool to enhance their education and careers.
In August of 2023, the PGCC Gaming Club was established. We ran the club for the entirety of the 2023-2024 school year and intend to renew the club every year, so as to keep the longevity of impact to students. We have already begun our 2024-2025 club year and have many future events planned. Adjacent to here is an example of a recent flyer that we consistently use throughout the year to advertise our events. The club itself maintains constant communication with it's members through a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) platform called Discord. It is there where we are able to post announcements to our many members.
At club social events, students very often bring their own gaming equipment to share and or collaborate together on some gaming conquests or competitions. Any food, snacks, or refreshments are purchased using club funds granted by the SEAL Office.
Any student is welcome to join. These regular club meetings provide a great opportunity to network, meet friends, and exchange contact info for gaming. Snacks and refreshments were funded by schools club budget which is about $350 per semester, but we will get a boost in club funding now that we are an established student organization. We regularly maintain about 40 active members, averaging ~25 attendees per meeting. Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, we successfully hosted 8 club meeting events.
Gaming tournaments offer students opportunities to build teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in a competitive yet fun environment. They provide a platform to connect with peers who share similar interests, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, tournaments can open doors to networking, scholarships, and potential career paths within the growing esports and gaming industry. Participating in tournaments also helps students build confidence and resilience as they face and overcome challenges together. The tournament events themselves are often coupled with fun events, such as our Halloween Party Cosplay Event titled "The Monster Smash," and the PGCC Day of Play, hosted by colleagues in the Center for Performing Arts. The PGCC Gaming Club has hosted multiple tournaments to this date and have awarded just over $300 in prizes to the winners of these events. For reference, the tournament hosted by the PGCC Gaming Club at the PGCC Day of Play featured 48 total competitors. Tournaments also gave us the opportunity to collaborate and raise funds for a charitable organization called A Cat's Life Rescue (Website), a dedicated PG County animal rescue organization.

Esports has experienced exponential growth over the past few decades, evolving from niche gaming competitions to a global phenomenon with millions of fans and participants. Today, esports boasts professional leagues, multimillion-dollar prize pools, sponsorships from major brands, and a dedicated fan base that rivals traditional sports. As a result, esports has established itself as a legitimate industry with career opportunities spanning professional play, broadcasting, event management, and game development. Collegiate Esports represents a huge opportunity for PGCC to tap into. Our friends at the University of Maryland, Northern Virginia Community College, and Howard Community College all run their own collegiate Esports teams. I have crafted a proposal that lays out, in detail, how PGCC could use our existing resources to fund an esports team that would MASSIVELY improve our college's popularity and enrollment. The funding itself is significantly cheaper considering that we already have thousands of dollars in gaming equipment in the CAT building. Please see the adjacent file for the proposal.
By founding this club, I have increased the community engagement of like-minded individuals at PGCC, where lifelong personal growth and friendships are formed. As mentioned before, there are so many opportunities to grow the gaming community at PGCC even further, and Esports is one of them. I am ready and willing to:
Lead a group of PGCC employees as part of a task force to initiate an Esports program.
Work with PGCC Athletics to develop a program (as outlined in the proposal) for a PGCC Esports Team.
Coach the aforementioned PGCC Esports Team with my experience in education, gaming, and sports.
Collaborate with other local institutions such as Northern Virginia Community College, Howard Community College, and the University of Maryland where I have already established points of contact to grow our gaming community even further, and collaborate on gaming events such as scrimmages, tournaments, and charitable events.
