On February 21, 2021, SCU's Product Club hosted its first-ever Product Challenge event, focused on Product Innovation. The 4-hour event was designed to inspire students for a future career in product. Seven teams of 5 students/alumni were provided an image prompt and asked to develop their own problem statement from looking at the image prompt, identify their customer persona via a customer interview session, develop a storyboard, and prototype their solution. The event culminated in each team giving a 4-minute elevator pitch on their unique solution to the identified problem.
The image prompt provided to the students was a busy working mom trying to work while taking care of her two young children at home during COVID. While all teams received the same prompt, it was exhilarating to see that all seven teams through customer interviews identified a unique problem and a unique solution. They ranged from a physical product to software designed for the mom, platforms designed for the kids, and even an AI-enabled personal assistant!
While all teams did a fantastic job given the allocated time, the coaches selected two teams for the awards "Best Innovative Idea" and "Best Marketable Product"! See above for all team presentations.
SCU's Product Club received tremendous support from Professor Kumar Sarangee, and Shashank Saggar, who selflessly assisted the club in designing this event. The club also received invaluable input from its Advisory Board members Professor Fiona Ji, and Charlotte Swenson. All seven teams were also paired with an industry professional serving as a coach for their teams. These coaches graciously shared their personal experiences and helped guide the teams throughout the event (companies and positions were current as of the event):
Yan Jin, Thermo Fisher Scientific - Global Business and Product Manager
Luke Congdon, Nutanix - Director of Product Management
Deb Bose, Guidewire Software - Integration Leader
Vimal Suba, IronNet Cybersecurity - Director of Product Management
Vishnu Ramani, BD - Global Marketing Manager
Jian Cao, Cepheid - Program Manager
Eryn Olson, SCU - Associate Director of Marketing
This event was designed and hosted by Product Club's leadership team: Ollie Zhou (event lead), Rachel Chang, and Karan Gupta.
