GE top-load washer with oil leakage from the transmission/gearcase and a non-working agitator after prolonged severe vibration.
Severe shaking, oil leakage, or an agitator that does not move in a GE top-load washer can be caused by several issues, including:
Worn or broken suspension rods
Severely unbalanced loads
Damaged agitator or drive components
Worn bearings
Internal transmission or gearcase damage
Stripped or broken internal gear teeth
Damaged input or output shaft
Gearcase seal failure causing oil leakage
Diagnosis & Repair:
This GE top-load washer had been shaking severely during operation. The suspension rods were worn, and the transmission/gearcase was leaking oil. The agitator had also stopped turning.
Continued operation with excessive vibration may have contributed to internal gearcase damage, including possible stripped or broken gear teeth. The damaged transmission/gearcase assembly was replaced to restore normal washer operation.
Prevention Tip:
If a washer shakes violently, first check whether the load is unbalanced or concentrated on one side of the tub. If severe shaking continues, stop using the washer and have it inspected by a technician. Replacing worn suspension rods early may help prevent more expensive damage to the transmission or gearcase.
