Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong is a registered charity that is committed to providing far-reaching orchestral training for young musicians. Pro Arte’s musicians have been accepted into professional orchestras across four continents, including London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Houston Grand Opera, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, Singapore Symphony Orchestra and many others in Asia and Hong Kong. Thanks to the support of the prestigious music schools, our musicians have been admitted to The Juilliard School, the Indiana University Jacob School of Music, Royal Academy of Music (UK), Royal College of Music and Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris (France) in multiple years. Pro Arte’s members have also performed extensively overseas at music festivals such as the renowned Tanglewood Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, The Pacific Music Festival and Youtube Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Grammy Award-winning conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. Covering a wide range of nationalities, our members come from Korea, the United States, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong.
In 2024, the orchestra reached a milestone of its 15th season by performing the complete symphony of Mahler 9. The concert was a monumental achievement for any orchestra and was broadcast on RTHK Radio 4 (Classical Music Channel). In the 2017/18 season, the orchestra organized a highly successful international festival led by Emmy-award winning conductor Jahja Ling - the first and only conductor of Chinese descent who has conducted all of the major symphony orchestras in North America and holds the longest working relationship ever in the 100-year history of one of the world’s greatest orchestras - The Cleveland Orchestra. The festival concert and conducting masterclass were joined by professional conductors and musicians from Taiwan, Japan, Austria (Vienna) and the US.
In the 2009/10 season, the orchestra performed the complete symphony of Mahler 4 with renowned Korean soprano In-hye Kim. The performance was received with tumultuous applause by the audience, and was highly praised when reviewed by the major Korean press Yonhap News Agency who acclaimed it "a tour de force".
Pro Arte has collaborated with international artists such as Danny Driver (Hyperion-recording British pianist with two Gramophone award nominations), SungSic Yang (Sony Classical recording violinist), Sung-Won Yang (exclusive Universal Music cellist), Paul Silverthorne and Olivier Stankiewicz (Principal Viola and Principal Oboe of London Symphony Orchestra), Jeff Nelsen (long-time hornist of the world-renowned Canadian Brass), Edward Auer (the First American prize-winner of the prestigious International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw), Geoffrey Simon (the London-based conductor who has conducted, amongst others, the London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras) and the internationally-famous popular operatic quartet IL DIVO. Pioneer of contemporary compositions, the orchestra in 2008 had the honor of being chosen to be the third stop of the world premiere tour of Cala Tuent by Australian composer Barry Conyngham, alongside with other professional orchestras such as the Queensland Orchestra.
To ensure that no deserving candidate is prevented from attending Pro Arte for financial reasons, all participants are enrolled on merit-based, full-tuition scholarships which are renewable at the end of the season upon successful re-audition. With Music Director Ho-man Choi and its principal players as representatives, Pro Arte has been featured regularly in the local media, including South China Morning Post, Ming Pao and Ta Kung Pao, as well as on RTHK Radio Four, Metro Finance Radio and the Hong Kong Television Broadcast Limited (TVB). Pro Arte was also the Artist-in-Residence of Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the 2010/11 season and was invited to perform in Festive Korea in multiple years, presented by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong.
