Cambridge-trained Ho-man Choi first gained recognition as he was appointed Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001. His assistance to the music director brought him opportunities to collaborate with leading artists such as Gil Shaham, as well as famous composer Bright Sheng in a recording project for Naxos, in which he was intensively involved, and was later recognised as a top-10 album by Gramophone Magazine. Known as an orchestra builder, Ho-man Choi is the founder and the Music Director of Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong, which under his leadership has entered the seventeenth season, with musicians whose professionalism highly acclaimed as “exemplary” by international critics on concertonet.com, and thus redefining orchestras in the community. His dedication to the development of young musicians has won him international affirmation and was once interviewed by the NHK of Japan. It was in this capacity, he conducted a number of highly successful full-house concerts sponsored by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, featuring leading Korean artists such as violinist SungSic Yang and cellist Sung-won Yang, and was hailed a “tour de force” by major Korean press Yonhap News Agency. He has performed with distinguished artists such as the internationally renowned pianist Melvyn Tan, cellist Jian Wang, Canadian Brass’ Hornist Jeff Nelsen, violinist Corey Cerovsek, pop artists George Lam, Sandy Lam and Teresa Carpio, to name a few. He recorded with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra on Warner Music Group, Worldstar Music and Eastasia Music, with concerts regularly broadcasted on television and viewed by millions of audience in Hong Kong and China.
In 2023, Choi has been invited by the President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to establish the PolyU Artists’ Alliance, alongside with other leading artists such as Dr. Liza Wang, Mr To Kwok-wai, Dr Joseph Ting, Mr Albert Au and Mr Cheng Kok-kong, to advance art and culture in Hong Kong.
Frequently in demand, Ho-man Choi has directed several orchestras and has conducted on three continents. His recent performance highlights include a full-house concert with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra in Korea as their youngest guest conductor. He has served as Artistic Director of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic in the USA, and has appeared with orchestras in the USA (New York, Ann Arbor), the UK and Ireland (London, Cambridge, Dublin, Galway), France (Paris), Austria (Vienna), Germany (Ludwigshafen Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland Pfalz, Göettingen Symphony Orchestra), and China (Shenzhen, Macau).
Recipient of special mention award of the world-renowned Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors, Ho-Man Choi is also the first Hong Kong conductor to receive the certificate award in Sir Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition. He received his Master of Music in instrumental conducting from the Indiana University School of Music and a Master of Arts degree from Cambridge University. His teachers include protégées of Herbert von Karajan, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Ferenc Fricsay and Pierre Monteux - Imre Palló, Thomas Baldner and David Effron and such guest conductors as Kurt Masur. Additional studies came under renowned pedagogue Gustav Meier. Winner of Cambridge Commonwealth Trust scholarships, Ho-man Choi in his early days has conducted the Clare College Orchestra, Cambridge. He was also the rehearsal and cover conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s tour in Korea, followed by a historic whirlwind four-city European tour in England and France, and has already toured extensively to prestigious halls such as Theatre des Champs-Élysées and Barbican Hall.
In the USA, The Herald Times has applauded his performances as featuring "plenty of sweep, intensity" with a "luster of sound". "His direction is clear and timely, he conducts with confidence and a certain personal style", said Ta Kung Pao newspaper in Hong Kong, on Choi’s Asian première of the Timpani Concerto by William Kraft. A sought-after speaker and educator for educational institutions and governmental cultural promotion events, Choi has hosted extensive music education programmes and outreach concerts that have reached more than 150,000 students. He has also been a radio presenter on RTHK Radio 4 and was the Artist-in-Residence of Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the 10/11 season. In recent years, he has been invited to perform in Le French May and Festive Korea, presented by the Consulate General of France and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong respectively.
Ho-man Choi is currently a faculty member at the Hong Kong Baptist University, teaching Instrumental and Choral Conducting, and has served as a seminar speaker and guest lecturer for various universities such as The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education. He has also served as a member of jury in the Southeast Asia Band Festival and Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows Competitions organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. He was also the conducting instructor of the orchestra’s “Conducting Seminar, Workshops and Showcase” supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development in 2023.
Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong 的音樂總監蔡浩文,是香港出生的指揮家,曾指揮多個樂團,樂縱遍及三大洲。近期的精彩演出包括在韓國客席指揮釜山愛樂樂團等,是次音樂會全院滿座,蔡氏也是釜山愛樂樂團最年輕的客席指揮家。他曾任香港管弦樂團駐團指揮,美國布林明頓交響樂團藝術總監,愛樂青年管弦樂團藝術總監,印第安納哥倫布愛樂團助理指揮。蔡氏曾與多位著名音樂家合作,包括鋼琴家陳萬榮、大提琴家王健、加拿大銅管五重奏資深圓號家謝菲.尼爾遜;流行曲歌星林子祥、杜麗莎、葉麗儀、林憶蓮、倫永亮等。他亦曾指揮香港管弦樂團為多間唱片公司錄音,包括華納唱片、環星音樂及東亞唱片等。蔡氏所指揮之一系列極受歡迎及賣座的音樂會,定期於本地電視台播放,曾欣賞過之觀眾以百萬計。2023年,蔡氏應香港理工大學校長的邀請,與汪明荃博士、杜國威、丁新豹博士、區瑞強、鄭國江等共同成立理大藝術家聯盟,推動本地的藝術發展。
貝藏松國際青年指揮家大賽特別表揚獎得主,蔡氏在美國印第安納大學音樂學院修習管弦樂指揮,考獲音樂碩士學位。就學期間,師承鮑德納、艾弗龍、巴羅及該校的客席指揮馬素亞。1999年他和另外五名青年指揮獲曼克頓音樂學院選中,隨馬高和曼漢納習藝。他也受教於著名指揮教育家邁亞門下。此外,蔡氏亦為劍橋大學文學碩士,更於2002年獲蘇提國際指揮大賽優異文憑,成為第一位獲該項殊榮的香港指揮家。在推廣古典音樂工作上,蔡氏曾主持及指揮香港管弦樂團的「恒生銀行跳躍音符伴成長」音樂教育計劃,演出一系列動聽卻具教育意義的音樂會,向超過15萬名中、小學生介紹古典音樂。此外,他也是香港電台第四台節目:「音樂時刻」及「愛上管弦樂」的主持。他亦獲邀主講音樂事務處「4B管弦奇遇」、「穿梭愛的樂章--西樂篇」音樂講座。蔡氏亦是香港理工大學於10/11年度之「駐校藝術家」。2012年,蔡氏獲邀於法國領事館舉辦的法國五月節中獻技,亦常獲大韓民國駐香港總領事館的邀請,於韓國十月文化節中與韓國頂尖音樂家及其他本地專業藝術團隊一同推介精彩音樂給本地觀眾。
蔡氏於香港浸會大學教授管弦樂及合唱指揮,並曾於香港多間大學擔任講座講員及客席講師,包括香港中文大學、香港理工大學及香港大學專業進修學院等。他常獲康樂及文化事務署音樂事務處的邀請,多年來擔任香港青年音樂匯演全港中小學交響樂團及弦樂團比賽評判,及指揮大師班的導師。去年,本樂團獲香港藝術發展局的資助,舉辦了一系列的指揮大師班及講座,由蔡氏主講及教授。蔡氏在美國的表現,獲《先驅時報》譽為「氣勢雄厚,激情澎湃、樂聲嘹亮」;本港的《大公報》亦讚道:「他對樂隊不同器樂部的指示很清晰、適時,除了顯露出信心外,還展現了他一些個人風格」。
