A summary report provides the total number of MT letters that were printed and returned for a specified date range. This report breaks down reasons for letter return by the comments field in the EAS MT Letter Status File. The report prompts you to enter the start and end processing dates, as well as the print device. An example of this report is provided in Appendix H. Once you've created your report, you can begin printing letters!
Before the 1840s, postage was paid by the recipient of a printed letter, and the cost depended on the number of sheets and the distance the letter traveled. Fortunately, the reformed postal system and penny postage made printing letters more affordable. Sir Rowland Hill also introduced official pre-printed envelopes and adhesive postage stamps, which led to the invention of the Penny Black stamp. Postage stamps and official pre-printed envelopes became widespread, and many people still use them today.
