I came out as trans around three years ago after questioning my identity for years before that. Since I wasn't educated on what it means to be LGBTQ+, I thought being trans was just something other people were and that I couldn't be trans myself. Because of the lack of education that students ranging k-12 receive, I felt misunderstood and alone a lot of the time. I didn't really ever feel like I fit in with friend groups of boys that I was in and I never understood why until I started thinking about my gender identity and sexuality. I first started questioning my identity when I was in 6th grade after we had high school students come in and talk to us about what it meant to be LGBTQ+. My experience (which is similar to many other trans people's experiences) goes to show that with better education and safe spaces, children would feel a lot more comfortable expressing themselves. Now, after three years of being out, I have started to better understand myself and my identities. My journey eventually led me to come out as Non-Binary and Queer, which are the two identities that I feel like fit me the most. Being trans in our society is not easy as most of you know, but with this protest and the activism I am doing, I hope that we can make a difference in our world and make lasting change so that we are able to feel comfortable going about our lives without having to worry about if we are safe or not.
