FGSW-CWA LOCAL 1104 BUSINESS AGENT ELECTION
Graduate workers need a Business Agent who is accountable, reachable, prepared, and serious about contract enforcement. Our CBA expires in June 2027. The contract campaign starts well before bargaining starts.
What strong representation looks like.
Since before the first steward elections, Preston sought multiple years of training haand has helped graduate workers enforce their contract, recover lost compensation, defend appointments and funding, navigate difficult workplace situations, and organize collectively around problems affecting entire departments.
The record is not just a list of cases. It is what members say happened when they needed their union.
(See below for actual settlement documents).

Strong representation is measured by what happens when members actually need their union.
If the Union has helped you during Preston's tenure as steward, chief steward, and BA with a grievance, funding or pay problem, workplace conflict, appointment issue, benefits question, or another problem at Fordham, share your experience. Your story can help other graduate workers understand what active contract enforcement and member representation look like.

Un-Terminating the Graduate Student Council
Preston filed the first grievance regarding the University termination of the GSC Officer GAships and thus GSAS student's access to GSC funds. He filed the first grievance and negotiated the first settlement prior to arbitration with the Fordham administration. This preserves two GAships paid at the Teaching Fellow rate (whereas the University had attempted to argue for the lowest GAship rate) as well as access and democratic GSC control of over $200,000 of GSAS student activities fee funds annually. Without the GSC Officers, the GSC would not function properly allowing the administration to control or at least hoard the GSAS student activities fee funds.
Negotiating Monetary Severance Package for Worker in Hostile Work Environment
Preston filed a grievance that allowed a worker who was suffering a hostile supervisor and work environment to receive her desired amount of pay approximating two weeks of pay when her supervisor berated her for doing what her supervisor asked of her.
Other Settlements Have Been Negotiated under Consensual Non-Disclosure Agreements
Preston has settled grievances for people who have been denied funding improperly, though the settlement warranted an NDA, which means we cannot say more about the work we did to make that settlement happen.
"As a former Vice President and President of the Graduate Student Council, I saw firsthand how Preston stepped defended and saved the GSC. Before he had even received official steward training from the Local, he knew who to ask and that we needed to file a grievance. He drafted it, got it reviewed and approved by the union’s legal specialist and counsel, and filed it before Fordham could pull any more shenanigans. What matters more than filing grievances, though, is Preston’s commitment to rank-and-file leadership. When I had my own grievance fight, he made sure I was able to design and lead it in ways I am comfortable with rather than speaking for me. He helped me secure a speaking role at our rally and kept fighting even when others said it was a lost cause or that the University was simply too powerful to take on. And when Fordham held GSC moneys hostage, Preston helped us keep serving graduate students anyway, holding a union sponsored Research Day and sustaining the food pantry and other GSC events. That is the kind of leadership I trust: knowing when to fight, knowing how to fight, and making sure the people most affected are both protected and the ones leading the struggle."
"Fordham erroneously sent my tuition bill to collections. Within 24 hours of contacting Preston, he started to take action. He led the charge and helped me navigate an opaque and confusing system. He got the University to remove my bill from collection and waive a fee without even needing to file a grievance. I couldn’t have asked for a better advocate!"
"After I was berated by my supervisor for sending an email I had been instructed to send, Preston stepped in and made sure I was protected. He did not expect me to simply return to the same environment and pretend nothing had happened. Instead, he advocated for me, represented me through the end of my employment, and helped negotiate a severance package worth several thousand dollars. Having someone from the union firmly in my corner made an enormous difference. Preston made me feel supported, protected, and confident that I did not have to navigate the situation alone. I am incredibly grateful for his advocacy during an extremely difficult time."
"Preston was able to promptly identify the proper avenues for recourse and facilitated interfacing with administration about the issue. He was committed not only to solving the issue, but to doing so in as timely a manner as possible knowing that grad workers depend on timely stipends for survival."
“As a Steward, Preston stood with CIS GSWs and helped us make a strong case to defend and protect our scholarship compensation. His advocacy and persistence ensured our concerns were heard, and his support made a real difference.”
“I’m very grateful for Preston’s unwavering support during our scholarship grievance process. He listened to each of our individual cases with care and played an important role in achieving a fair outcome.”
“As Chief Steward, Preston helped Computer Information Science Graduate Student Workers make a strong case to defend their scholarship compensation.”
