FGSW-CWA LOCAL 1104 BUSINESS AGENT ELECTION
Graduate workers need a Business Agent who is reachable, prepared, and serious about contract enforcement. Our CBA expires in June 2027. The contract campaign starts before bargaining starts.
WHY I AM RUNNING AGAIN
A contract is only as strong as our ability to enforce it. When members face funding cuts, appointment problems, pay issues, tuition charges, workload violations, benefits confusion, retaliation, or unclear answers from the University, the union has to investigate, document, escalate, and organize.
This election is not symbolic.
The next Business Agent will help decide whether FGSW enters the year before contract expiration with strong records, trained stewards, mapped departments, and a clear enforcement strategy.

KEY ENDORSEMENTS
"Preston’s been doing the job. Preston’s grown into the role, and we’ve grown together in doing the work that needs to be done for the membership."
"Preston has more experience in the labor movement than many professional union staff. No one is more qualified for the position than Preston."
“Preston leads with integrity and a genuine commitment to his fellow workers. He understands that strong unions are built through organizing, and he’s dedicated to doing that work every day.”
"Preston has been very helpful to me as a fellow Business Agent, will make a great Legal Specialist for the Local, and will bargaining a winning successor agreement."
"Outside of the committee itself, no one went to more bargaining sessions than Preston during the first contract negotiation. He has the experience, dedication, and institutional knowledge necessary to do the job."
Mark and Preston catching up and discussing union matters in Atlanta, GA while Preston attended the Labor Research Action Network to learn new research skills.
"Preston played an integral role in writing the first contract proposals and thus the first contract, and because he has learned the ins and outs of bargaining, organizing actions and strikes, and now enforcing our contract, he is the best option for Business Agent."
"I would endorse whoever would be the best BA. I endorse Preston for business agent. Speaking as a former bargaining committee member, no one has a better combination of knowledge of the institution, commitment to the rank-and-file struggle labor movement, and willingness to use any and all maximally effective means to defend graduate students rights."

"As we move steadily towards a new round of contract campaigning, the FGSW needs consistency and experience in our leadership positions. From within my role as Steward of English I’ve seen how tirelessly Preston has worked during his year as BA to lead formal grievances, outreach to members across all faculties, and center vulnerable students including internationals (myself included) in his advocacy. I’ve always felt supported and informed in my role as a new Steward, largely thanks to Preston’s assistance and consistent communication. Having worked with GSWs through out his entire tenure at Fordham and as Business Agent, Preston is keenly aware of the struggles faced by graduate student workers, but is also able to commit his full time energy to the BA position. I have every faith that Preston will lead the FGSW successfully through the Spring 2027 contract campaign."
"Preston has always been available as both a sounding board as well as to help strategize and take action when issues arise. His dedication to helping union members is incredible. "
"I am proud to endorse Preston Carter for reelection as Business Agent of Fordham Graduate Student Workers. As a Fordham maintenance worker, I have seen Preston stand in solidarity with our members, including during our recent contract struggle. He understands that workers across Fordham are strongest when our unions support one another. Preston is committed to building worker power and fighting for union members. I encourage Fordham graduate workers to reelect him as Business Agent."
"Preston played a major role in building FGSW before the union had recognition. He organized the website committee by seeking out members with technical skill, bringing the union’s organizing efforts online.”
“Preston advocated strongly and effectively on my behalf and effected swift resolutions to my concerns with persistence and professionalism. I especially appreciated his commitment to resolving underlying systemic issues, treating individual cases as an opportunity to advocate for improvements that benefit all members.”
"FGSW’s next business agent will need to both enforce the existing contract and organize their fellow graduate workers for the coming fight for a good second contract. Preston’s experience as business agent and service in FGSW‘s core leadership in the last contract campaign make him ideal person to lead FGSW. Preston knows the contract inside and out but also knows that the contract is only as good as the graduate workers fighting together to improve and enforce it."
"I support Preston for Business Agent because he is responsive, approachable, and genuinely committed to helping graduate workers. I experienced this firsthand when I had an issue with my hiring form during the summer. Although the issue was not covered by the union, Preston still took the time to hear me out and guide me on how to proceed. That willingness to help, even when something is outside the union's direct responsibility, is exactly the kind of leadership and support I value in a Business Agent."
"Preston helped us, Fordham graduate student works, with getting the tuition scholarship we were promised when Fordham tried to role back the offer they gave. His dedication, fearlessness, and industriousness is unmatched!"
"I support Preston because he has consistently shown that he will fight for workers on the ground. From the very start, he stepped up to file the first grievance that saved Graduate Student Council positions, and he is committed to challenging every single contract violation whether it involves pay, workload, or benefits.
He is not waiting around for the next cycle either. He is already preparing our 2027 contract fight by listening to individual departments and turning our everyday workplace struggles into real bargaining demands.
On top of that, he is focused on empowering the rest of us. By training stewards in rank and file organizing, providing practical resources, and actively protecting our most vulnerable colleagues like international workers, he makes sure no one falls through the cracks. Most importantly, he believes in total transparency, keeping members informed and in the driver seat of our own union."
"Preston pours effort and care into the union's mission. His genuine interest in improving graduate students work conditions allows us do our best work"

"Person has been incredibly supportive to GSWs over the last year, including me personally "
"Fordham erroneously sent my tuition bill to collections. Within 24 hours of contacting Preston, he started to take action. He led the charge and helped me navigate an opaque and confusing system. He got the University to remove my bill from collection and waive a fee without even needing to file a grievance. I couldn’t have asked for a better advocate!"

"I support Preston for Business Agent because he is always there when you need him. He is very knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely willing to help. Whenever there is a problem, he takes the time to listen, explain things clearly, and work toward a solution. He also responds very quickly, which I really appreciate. I know I can count on Preston to be there and do his best to help, and that’s why I support him for Business Agent."

"I am proud to endorse Preston Carter for FGSW-CWA Local 1104 Business Agent. Preston has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to immigrant rights and to protecting the dignity and rights of immigrant students at Fordham University. His advocacy reflects a deep understanding of the importance of solidarity, representation, and collective action within our university community.
I believe Preston would bring that same commitment to his role as Business Agent. He understands that a union is not only about workplace protections, but also about standing together to defend the rights and dignity of the broader community in which we work. I strongly support Preston Carter for FGSW-CWA Local 1104 Business Agent.
I can personally speak to Preston Carter’s commitment to immigrant rights and his willingness to stand alongside students and colleagues when their rights and safety are at stake. As professors at Fordham University, we worked together to advocate for sanctuary protections because we believed it was our responsibility not only as educators, but also as members of the union community that represents and protects workers at Fordham.
I was there alongside Preston as we advocated for sanctuary protections for our students and worked to ensure that immigrant students knew they had people within their university community willing to stand with them. His commitment was not simply theoretical; he was willing to participate in collective advocacy and stand in solidarity with our students.
That experience is why I believe Preston would be a strong Business Agent for FGSW-CWA Local 1104. He understands the importance of using our collective voice to protect people, defend our community, and ensure that no one is left to face these challenges alone.
"He has a proven track record of doing this job well. Preston has been a committed member of union leadership for a long time and in the process has learned how best to navigate the system and support graduate workers. I trust Preston and his experience with the position of BA. "
“I had a problem with my scholarship not applying correctly, and Preston was really attentive and proactive in getting the problem solved.”
"From the very first day, despite being an M.A. student and not being technically represented by the union, Preston was bringing me into the fold, getting me flyering with GSW, humoring my questions about various bargaining obstacles, putting people in touch for the ad-hoc, student-led effort to monitor the "Intensive Supervision Appearance Program" (ICE-managed) facility at Fordham Plaza, etc. One thing that Preston understands, from my experience with him, is the importance of not strictly professional association, but casual association that can nonetheless aid the union effort. The capacity to build channels that are not necessarily institutional in nature, but immediately personal and directly actionable is one that Preston embodies, one that is invaluable to any organization, and one that is the reason I endorse him for Business Agent."
"Preston is hardworking, principled, and committed to fight for you. His kindness and attention to his workers along with solid knowledge of the university administration makes him the ideal candidate. He’s the one you need!"
"In just the few months since I met Preston, he has proven to be a thoughtful and committed union member. He takes initiative to learn new and innovative approaches to union work, and also to help fellow activists in the labor movement. During the 3-day training that I co-facilitated at UMass Amherst, Preston was eager to learn more about democratic approaches to opposition research and strategic campaign planning. His insights and participation made the program better for everyone involved."
"Preston has taught me to use RFIs ULPs, and grievances strategically against university administrations to secure useful information and protect members. He has also contributed significantly to division-wide political education efforts."
