Enhancing music skills during the summer break
Hi, I'm Clayton!
I am happy to introduce a new summer music opportunity for young musicians in the Prescott, AZ area: Prescott Summer Strings! This is aimed toward families with children enrolled in public-school orchestra programs in PUSD and the surrounding area, and who want their young musicians to excel at playing their instruments, even during summer break.
Music skills in young string musicians typically get rusty over the summer. My hope is that Prescott Summer Strings will counter that phenomenon and actually enhance students' abilities and love for music.
This program constitutes private lessons with one-on-one instruction centered around the four basic principles listed below. While time spent in an orchestra classroom offers invaluable experience to improve musicianship, private lessons uniquely increase technical ability in young players. Prescott Summer Strings is a fantastic option for students of all ages, regardless of whether they have had previous experiences with a private music teacher. While violin is my instrument of focus, viola, cello, and double bass players are also invited to sign up!
Lessons will focus on...
Instrument technique is one of the first things to go when students set their instruments aside for too long. Technique practice is a fundamental element of improving at a stringed instrument. Plus, musicians with solid technique are better equipped to learn new music quicker.
An understanding of basic music theory (such as key signatures, scales, and musical form) is totally within the reach of young players! Theory helps any musician play their music with deeper appreciation and comprehension.
I believe that music studied in private lessons ought to be challenging, but within the reach of the student. "Academic" pieces will be balanced by fun music that the student helps select. Duets and other accompanied pieces will also be introduced.
While it can be intimidating for young players, performance is a necessary part of developing as a musician. Periodically, I will ask students to perform portions of their music for family members or friends. It's good to take ourselves out of our comfort zones every now and again!
