SUMMER WORK .
Our study of life requires us to learn new terms each week. To help you in this task, you will compile VOCABULARY LISTS made up of “key terms” that are bold-faced throughout the text. These are also listed at the end of each chapter. Definitions are found in the glossary at the back of your text. For every chapter, write/type the key terms and their definitions and study these before coming to class each week. You may use copy paper, index cards, a notebook, or notebook paper in a binder - whatever helps you learn the best! Make sure they are readily accessible to you in class because each chapter’s list will be checked in class weekly.
Get a jump start on your vocabulary lists BEFORE classes begin in the fall. This will lighten your work load when classes are in full swing. Doing this summer work is not required, but it is highly recommended.

GRADES:
Students' individual grades will be assessed based on their performance in the following areas:
Tests - 40%
Quizzes - 15%
Lab Worksheets - 20%
Homework - 15%
Research Papers/Presentations/Special Projects - 10%
Final grade will be the average of the first and second semester grades.
Progress reports will be sent out at appropriate times during the school year.
ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION:
Students should arrive in class well-prepared so we can have very productive class sessions. Active participation is expected during class discussions.
Please notify me VIA E-MAIL, as far in advance as possible, regarding any anticipated absences. Text messages are welcome BUT e-mail is preferable. I will respond back to let you know the absence has been noted.
Students will be responsible for material covered in class during their absence. Missed quizzes and tests may only be made up for excused absences. Late submissions will incur appropriate deductions, unless the delay is excused.
Quizzes and/or tests are usually given during the first part of the class period, so please be punctual.
Students are highly encouraged take down notes while in class. Note-taking is a skill which will benefit them not just in high school, but in college and beyond.
Students are to be team players and be respectful of everyone in class. Lab partners are to help each other in the clean-up of their respective tables after each experiment or activity. Let us remember to leave the room as clean if not cleaner than we found it.
There will be a short break half-way into the class period. Students may step outside and eat a snack during this time; otherwise, no food or drink is to be consumed during regular class sessions.
COMMUNICATION AND FEEDBACK:
Class-related communication, assignments, etc. will be posted in Google Classroom. You will receive an invitation to join the class site once your registration is confirmed. Please make sure to acquaint yourselves with this platform if you are not familiar with it. This is where most teacher-student interaction will take place outside of the classroom.
If you have a general question which could benefit the class, post it in Google Classroom, so others can also see the response. If a question is more specific and pertains to you directly, feel free to email me. During the week, I try to respond to messages within 24 hours. Allow 48 hours response time on weekends and holidays.
A progress report will be issued quarterly and sent to the student and parents via email. Students are required to bring a copy of this report back with a parent's signature.
Parent communication is always welcome! Let me know if you have any questions or comments about your student's progress in the course. Thank you for allowing me to partner with you in your child's education in life science. I consider it a privilege! I look forward to a great year of learning ahead with your students!
