Welcome to Life Science!
I am excited that we can all study LIFE together this year! My hope is that what we discover in this journey will give us a greater appreciation of God as a creative and wise Designer of life and that we might learn how to better care for the world that He gave us.
Come explore the fascinating study of LIFE!
This course is a survey of God’s creation that will introduce students to different fields in life science. These fields of study will provide the basic tools to examine living things, how they work, and how they relate with one another and the physical world — from the small, simple yet complex bacteria to the incredible, amazing human body.
Weekly class format involves lectures and discussions, followed by engaging class activities such laboratory experiments, microscopy, and dissections — all designed to enhance the students' understanding of concepts learned.
Students will have a chance to hone their research and oral presentation skills as they learn about a specific biome and share the results of their investigation in class. They will be guided step by step in the research and writing process.
Special projects and activities also include putting together a Living Kingdom scrapbook for a greater understanding of the order and classification of living things.
In this course, we will examine the following aspects of LIFE:
Biochemistry - Molecules of Life
Cells - fundamental units of life
Bacteria & Viruses - friends & foes?
Protists - vital supporters of ecosystems
Fungi - the decomposers (and more!)
Animals - consumers, helpers, and more!
Plants - the producers and base of most food chains
The Human Body - fearfully and wonderfully made!
The Environment - it's a small world after all!
"Great are the works of the Lord; studied by all who delight in them." Psalm 111:2 (ESV)

About me
I love discovering the details of life! Every year I enjoy learning along with my students as we embark on the study of living things and the world they inhabit. I taught biology right after college and while in graduate school many, many moons ago. Later I stayed home and raised five wonderful children, who were all home educated as well. I returned to the classroom when we joined various homeschool co-ops as my kids got older. Teaching at PREP this year will be another adventure and God will show us great things! Join me and let us explore the science of LIFE!
