• Mr. Kishan Vibhakar, M. Tech. student of the 2020-2022 batch received the institute gold medal during the 19th convocation at SVNIT. Mr. Kishan worked on the impact of climate change and LULC on the upper Tapi basin under the guidance of Dr. P. L. Patel.

• Delivered an expert talk on "Morphology associated risks to water infrastructure and its risk reduction strategies through RS & GIS" in a 3-day training program on "Disaster resistant water infrastructure", organized by Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management, Gandhinagar.

• Ms. Vineela Nandam presented her work on "Evaluation of Open-source DTMs and TanDEM-X 12 DTM using ICESat-2 altimetry and surveyed data for a flat topography in India" in American Geophysical Union (AGU)  Fall meeting 2022, Chicago, Il and online everywhere .

• Ms. Resmi SR completed her PhD from CoE of the department has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in NIT Calicut.

November 2022

• Book chapter on " Assessment of sediment hazards by bed level variations around the bridge pier" in the River Dynamics and flood hazards appeared online. (Authors: Laxmi Narayana Pasupuleti, P. V. Timbadiya, and P. L. Patel)

• A research article by Shubham Jibhakate,  P. V. Timbadiya, and P L Patel on Flood Hazard Assessment for the Coastal Urban Floodplain using 1D/2D Coupled Hydrodynamic Model got published in Springer's Natural Hazards.

August 2022

• M. Tech. students Anayat Ullah and Gayatri Yaligar joined Prof. Patel's research group. They will be working on hydrologic and hydraulic aspects of Lower Tapi Basin and the river using robust models. 

July 2022

• M. Tech. students  Mr. Kishan Vibhakar, Ms. Vineetha Putta, and Ms. Payal Bhujbal successfully defended their research work carried out under the supervision of Prof. P. L. Patel. They worked on topics: Impact of LULC and Climate change of Burhanpur sub-catchment, shoreline change rate and coastal vulnerability of Surat region, and Optimal irrigation planning using soft computing techniques respectively.  The three of them got placed in Tata Consulting Engineers.

• Organized a One-day workshop on "Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources of Tapi Basin" on May 21, 2022 sponsored by the Indian National Committee on Climate Change (INCCC) Research Project Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR, RD & GR), Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS), Government of India organized by Centre of Excellence on Water Resources and Flood Management, Department of Civil Engineering, SVNIT Surat.

• Mr. Laxmi Narayan defended his PhD research work successfully. He worked on "Experimental investigation of bridge pier scouring in mobile boundary channels" under joint supervision of Dr. P. V. Timbadiya and Dr. P. L. Patel.

• Attended and delivered an expert talk on account of the World Water Day 2022  (Theme: Groundwater, making the invisible visible) organised by the Water Resources Engineering and Management Institute (WREMI), MSU Baroda on 22-03-2022).

• Prof. P. L. Patel has been appointed as and "Independent Director" for a proposed Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementation of Tapi River Front and Rejuvenation Project of Surat Municipal Corporation.

• INCCC research project on "Impact of climate change on water resources of Sabarmati basin" funded by Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, GoI is completed.

• Three of the M. Tech. students Mr. Shivansh Tiwary, Mr. Prabhat Dwivedi and Ms. Trusthi Sanghavi of 2019-2021 batch successfully defended their M. Tech. research work on 30 July 2021 under the guidance of Prof. P. L. Patel. Mr. Shivansh worked on 'Hydrological Modelling using SWAT: Morphometric, Sensitivity and Uncertainty analysis', Mr. Prabhat worked on 'Multisite calibration and validation of SWAT model for prediction of inflows into Ukai reservoir' and, Ms. Trusthi on 'Soft computing techniques in optimization of releases from Dharoi reservoir, India'.

• Delivered a keynote lecture on "Impact of Climate Variability on Water Security of Tapi Basin" in HYDRO 2020, hosted by NIT Rourkela.

• A TEQIP-III sponsored one-week short-term training program is organized on "Design of Storm Water Drainage Systems as per CPHEEO-2019" from March 15 to 19, 2021, coordinated by Dr. P. V. Timbadiya, Dr. Bandita Barman, and Dr. P. L. Patel. An expert lecture on 'Development of IDF curves' and 'Estimation of design flood for a stormwater design using the rational formula' is delivered.

• The research work carried out under the guidance of Prof. P. L. Patel & Prof. V. Jothiprakash by Dr. Priyank Sharma titled "Integrated Assessment of Hydroclimatic Variability Including Streamflow Modelling of a Climatically Heterogenous Basin in India" during his Ph.D. is selected for "Prof. U. C. Kothyari - ISH Best thesis award" for the year 2020.

• Mrs. Soumita Bid has successfully defended her PhD viva-voce. She worked on "Modeling of Near-Field Radionuclide Concentrations using CFD and Fuzzy approaches in a Lake environment" under the supervision of Prof. P.L. Patel and Dr. R. A. Christian.

• A research article by Ms. Vineela Nandam and Prof. P. L. Patel on "A novel hybrid approach using SVM and spectral indices for enhanced land use land cover mapping of coastal urban plains" is accepted for publication in Geocarto International, Taylor and Francis.

August 2020

• Under supervision of Dr. P. L. Patel, Anju K. V. and Nikita Saptarishy defended successfully their M. Tech. research work on August 17, 2020. Anju K. V. worked on Integrated Hydrologic and Hydraulic modelling, and, Nikita predicted stream flows for a sub-catchment in Tapi basin.

• Anju K. V. joined as a research scholar in IISc - Bangalore.

• Nikita is offered a post of Junior Research Fellow in IISc - Bangalore for "National Super-computing Mission".

• Ms. Resmi S. R. presented Pre-synopsis on August 10, 2020.

July 2020

• A Short Term Training Programme sponsored by TEQIP-III on "Design of Water Related Infrastructure for Smart City " was conducted during July 27-31, 2020. The programme focused on design and analysis of storm water network, sewerage network, water distribution network, and water hammer in pipe networks for an urban area, along with hands-on sessions on Bentley SewerGEMS, Bentley WaterGEMS and LOOP softwares. Prof. Patel talked on Measurement of rainfall and post processing of data, developing of IDF curve and on concepts of Storm Water Flow in this STTP.

• A research paper of Dr. Viraj D. Loliyana and Dr. P. L. Patel, titled 'A physics based Distributed Integrated Hydrological Model in Prediction of Water Balance of a Semi-arid Catchment in India' has been accepted for publication in the journal 'Environmental Modelling and Software' with ISSN:1364-8152, Elsevier.

• Our research titled 'Spatio-Temporal Variability of Rainfall Indices and their Teleconnections with El Niño-Southern Oscillation for Tapi Basin, India' has been published in 'Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences', which is co-authored by Lalit Kumar Gehlot, Shubham M. Jibhkhate, Priyank J. Sharma and P. V. Timbadiya. The work featured multi-variate space-time variability analysis of extreme rainfall indices and clustering the stations/regions exhibiting homogeneous behavior. • A research paper on 'Bed level variations around submerged tandem bridge piers in sand beds ' got published in ISH Journal of Hydraulic Engineering which is co-authored by P. Laxmi Narayana and P. V. Timbadiya.

January 2020

• Mr. Priyank J. Sharma, DST-Inspire Fellow, has successfully defended his PhD viva-voce on 22.01.2020. His doctoral thesis titled 'Integrated assessment of hydroclimatic variability including streamflow modelling of a climatically heterogeneous basin in India', involved comprehensive analysis of hydroclimatic variability across Tapi basin and their linkages to local and global forcing, assessment of water scare conditions and streamflow prediction modelling using data driven techniques.
