Dr. P. L. Patel
Dr. P. L. Patel is Professor (HAG) of Hydraulics and Water Resources in Department of Civil Engineering, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, India. He served as Deputy Director of the institute (SVNIT) during Sept 17, 2019 to Sept. 16, 2022. He also served the institute in the capacity of Dean (PG), Dean (R&C), Dean (Academic), and the Head, Dept. of Civil Engineering of the institute. Prior to joining SVNIT in 2007, he served as Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department in Delhi College of Engineering (now DTU) for eight years. Prior to working at DCE, he served as Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) in Border Roads Organization (BRO), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India, Govt. of India from 1995-1999. He did his Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Government Engineering College, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, India and, then, pursued his Master and Doctoral Degrees in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India (the then University of Roorkee).
He has more than 220 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences of repute. He has been instrumental in setting up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on 'Water Resources & Flood Management' in the Institute through research grant from World Bank sponsored TEQIP-II. The CoE has the state-of-the-art computational and experimental facilities consisting of a Computational Hydraulics Laboratory, Advanced Hydraulics Laboratory and CoE Library with relevant books on Water Resources Engineering.

Ms. Resmi SR completed her PhD from CoE of the department has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in NIT Calicut.

M. Tech. students Mr. Kishan Vibhakar, Ms. Vineetha Putta, and Ms. Payal Bhujbal successfully defended their research work carried out under the supervision of Prof. P. L. Patel. They worked on topics: Impact of LULC and Climate change of Burhanpur sub-catchment, shoreline change rate and coastal vulnerability of Surat region, and Optimal irrigation planning using soft computing techniques respectively. The three of them got placed in Tata Consulting Engineers.

A TEQIP-III sponsored one-week short-term training program is organized on "Design of Storm Water Drainage Systems as per CPHEEO-2019" from March 15 to 19, 2021, coordinated by Dr. P. V. Timbadiya, Dr. Bandita Barman, and Dr. P. L. Patel. An expert lecture on 'Development of IDF curves' and 'Estimation of design flood for a stormwater design using the rational formula' is delivered.

Under supervision of Dr. P. L. Patel, Anju K. V. and Nikita Saptarishy defended successfully their M. Tech. research work on August 17, 2020. Anju K. V. worked on Integrated Hydrologic and Hydraulic modelling, and, Nikita predicted stream flows for a sub-catchment in Tapi basin.
Anju K. V. joined as a research scholar in IISc - Bangalore.
Nikita is offered a post of Junior Research Fellow in IISc - Bangalore for "National Super-computing Mission".

July 2020
A Short Term Training Programme sponsored by TEQIP-III on "Design of Water Related Infrastructure for Smart City " was conducted during July 27-31, 2020. The programme focused on design and analysis of storm water network, sewerage network, water distribution network, and water hammer in pipe networks for an urban area, along with hands-on sessions on Bentley SewerGEMS, Bentley WaterGEMS and LOOP softwares. Prof. Patel talked on Measurement of rainfall and post processing of data, developing of IDF curve and on concepts of Storm Water Flow in this STTP.

His doctoral thesis titled 'Integrated assessment of hydroclimatic variability including streamflow modelling of a climatically heterogeneous basin in India', involved comprehensive analysis of hydroclimatic variability across Tapi basin and their linkages to local and global forcing, assessment of water scare conditions and streamflow prediction modelling using data driven techniques.
