Premkumar Iyer is a mechanical engineer specialising in energy engineering. He has a passion for research in soft matter physics and interfacial phenomenon. He did his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering from SB Jain Institute of Technology (formerly affiliated to RTM Nagpur University) and holds a Master's degree in Energy Engineering and Management from National Institute of Technology Calicut. He has been recognised as NPTEL Believer and NPTEL discipline star (in Mechanical Engineering domain), a testament to his quest for continuous learning.
He has had a privilege of working as a project intern at the Centre for Nanoscience and Engineering (CeNSE), Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The interdisciplinary research environment enabled him to diversify his skill sets in the research arenas he explored. His work engaged interests in droplet based microfluidics and the work ranged from dynamics of impinging droplets, freezing transitions of particle-laden droplets (liquid marbles), modal analysis. These works were carried in close conjunction to specially engineered surfaces like hydrophobic, superhydrophobic and oil-infused surfaces. Along the way, he did pick skills like high-speed imaging, surface preparation, as well as data and image processing.
Outside of the research work, Premkumar appreciates listening to pop music, sketching and casual reading to unwind. He is an automobile aficionado and enjoys leisurely drives. Being curious about culinary traditions, he enjoys experimenting with the spices and flavours in kitchen.
