Three Union Tools for Advancing Social Justice:
Social Justice Lens, Teachers' Professional Autonomy, and Our Collective Agreement
The BCTF's Social Justice Lens provides a framework to help teachers work together to defend public education for all by advancing the social justice values at the heart of our profession.
Teachers' professional autonomy is an emploument right recognized in the PRDTU/SD52 Collective Agreement that empowers teachers to practice teaching as social justice, by empowering teachers to put the needs of students first.
Our Collective Agreement between the BCTF/PRDTU and BCPSEA/SD52 sets out the terms of employment for every teacher in SD52. There are many provisions of the agreement that support the social justice goals of public education. Other parts of the agreement reflect labour victories, such as professional salaries for teachers, pay equity, job security, and workers' right to unionization, achieved through generations of social justice victories by unions.
