The job of teachers is to ensure that every student has equal access to an education. Professional autonomy helps make this possible.
Professional Autonomy Lens
As a member of the PRDTU, through our Collective Agreement with SD52 (read it here), your right "individual professional autonomy in determining the methods of instruction, planning, evaluation, and presentation of course materials" is protected and recognized.
The teachers' right to professional autonomy comes with the responsibility to also practice in accordance with professional standards, abide by the BCTF Code of Ethics, and meet the other responsibilities of the professional teacher.
The BCTF's Professional Autonomy Lens is a tool for teachers to understand and apply professional autonomy in our practice. It provides teachers with a practical framework to understand and defend this important aspect of our practice as a teaching professional.
Professional autonomy is an essential ingredient for "public education as social justice" because teachers exercise professional autonomy in order to ensure that students' needs come first.Â
Through the exercise of professional autonomy teachers are able to act with integrity and base educational decisions on the needs and interests of each student.
