Many journal websites and scientific database (Web of Science, SciFinder, etc.) require Chula’s network to access them. You must install Cisco AnyConnect from https://www.it.chula.ac.th/service/cunet-vpn-service/ and learn how to use it to gain an access to those websites.
Chula members can access to Google Drive and G Suites (https://www.it.chula.ac.th/service/googleapp/). Please save all files and their drafts in Google Drive. Also, install Google Drive for Desktop to access it like you accessing your local files. Note that I still prefer using Microsoft Office to Google Doc/Sheet/Slides.
You can cite only journal articles and key textbooks. You must install Mendeley (https://www.mendeley.com/) as a literature database and citation software. It is essential that everyone in the lab use the same software to prevent the incompatibility between programs. Read “Getting Started with Mendeley Desktop” to learn how to use it. Make sure that you know how to perform the following tasks:
Automatically adding a paper: You can set Mendeley to monitor a folder. Then, if you put a paper in that folder, Mendeley will automatically add all details about that paper. The details are usually accurate but might have some issue with old papers, which you may need to manually correct it.
Searching a paper: You can use an appropriate keyword to browse a paper from your database. You can add the modifier, such as “title:” to tell the program to find a keyword from only the title.
Taking note: You can directly read a paper and highlight or write a short note of the paper.
You need to download Mendeley Word Plugin (can be done from the Mendeley Desktop).
Citing a paper: You must cite a paper on a sentence that is aside from general knowledge. Use Mendeley plugin to cite a paper at any point in your manuscript, and it will automatically number the citation. When choosing a paper to cite, please choose the one which actually discusses it, not just the one briefly mentioned about that topic without any relevance.
Making a bibliography: You can put a bibliography in any citation format that each journal requests.
Note: Chula iThesis might requires you to use EndNote for these tasks. I believe that you can just export the Mendeley citation file and put it in EndNote to make them the same.
The ISI Web of Science/Web of Knowledge database (http://www.webofknowledge.com) is my favorite place to go searching paper. The user interface of the website is straightforward, although you might want to learn some trick for searching (https://videos.webofsciencegroup.com/watch/Wmsp7dTSE1PJYEscPAEBFG). In short, you should be able to
§ Use Basic Search to search Topic, Title, and Author (single or combined query).
§ Use truncation, e.g. electroch* (which will include electrochemistry and electrochemical).
§ Use Boolean operators: AND, OR, NOT.
§ Use proximity operators: quotation mark (“cyclic voltammetry”), NEAR
§ Refine search results.
Alternatively, you can use Google Scholar or SciFinder as well if they match your style.
