Where Passion Meets Purpose
Implications of a Just Society
The just society though not easily defined bears some implications for us as people in society.
Justice equals fairness and equity. This means that educational opportunities are created for all and as such close or lowers the socioeconomic gap as people become empowered and enabled to make more informed decisions for their own development. (Social Justice,n.d)
Social Justice (n.d) in their article provides an outlook on the power of education where they conclude that one of the main purposes of education is to redress social, political and economical inequalities. They argue that teachers within schools should use the curriculum to give birth to social consciousness within students and promote, care and respect.
The wage gap will also be tightened as people become more productive and people are given more fair wages for their work efforts. One of the major implications of justice within society is for the leaders to be fair to the citizens and hold themselves accountable to the laws. This will create a situation where the people are not being taken advantage of and instead they have access to information where they can make decisions that will serve their best interest.
People who exist in a just society are not over dependent on a government who relish the idea of an ignorant population. The people will no longer be tied to an idea that they need some hero to save them from their circumstances through materialistic gains. A just society values and appreciates the role of human resources for economic development, social reform and a better standard of moral living. This is manifested through the acceptance that all human beings regardless of their minor differences have a role to play in creating innovative advances where we build on each other's progress so that serves to develop interdependence rather than dependence.
The allegory of the cave as depicted in the video shows the implications of social justice through education. In the Jamaican context Marcus Mosiah Garvey’s philosophy played an integral role in how we identify ourselves as a black race. Garvey stressed on education and self-reliance and justice and equality for all, especially the black race. He stated that “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots, and encouraged upward mobility, up ye mighty race and emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds”. He was an inspired race leader who called upon blacks to seek their own ‘place in the sun’, proclaiming equality of the black race for the creation of independent legal and educational systems. He taught the people self-sufficiency through several business enterprises that still stand in Jamaican people today. Garvey’s legacy served as an integral force in building confidence and acceptance of diversity. He empowered the black race to believe in their abilities to create change.(Cengage,2018)
As stated in Plato’s allegory of the cave people were in the dark, manipulated by” the powers that be” but Marcus Garvey believed justice was for all in a just society and fought for equal rights and Justice which we are living today. (Cengage,2018)
Conclusion
We have come a far way from the “cave” mentality. We however still have a long way to go. We have highlighted the power of education and the opportunities it creates for us as Jamaican people to take back our power and tap into the greatness within us. We cannot deny the spiritual and moral compass that aided the development of justice and indeed provides strong arms in helping us demonstrate equality. The just society is not just a romantic mystical vision that is beyond reach but rather it can be achieved through education, wisdom and equity.
