Background
I started Peculiar Place-Capacity Building Services in honor and loving memory of my sister Noxcela Graham who taught me how to read. I started in the year 2021 and now we are a registered name with the Companies Office of Jamaica. Throughout my life and career I have been passionate about reading/literary competence and by extension human capacity development- hence the name of the Programme. Peculiar Place-Capacity Building Services was created for people who are struggling with educational, career and personal development issues. We aim to empower people with skills in literacy, self-direction/motivation and career development.
Peculiar Place was chosen as a brand name from a personal development, family and religious background. The word peculiar represents a new identity in line with the word of God. 1 Peter 2:9 says we are “a peculiar people” this brand was chosen because it helps us to see ourselves the way how God sees us “God’s special people” regardless of our backgrounds. Peculiar Place-Capacity Building Services is ideal for human services because we use unconventional methods to teach and to reach students so they can lead lives that are more productive. We take into account the educational as well as social/emotional needs and experiences of our clients in our service delivery. We use a non-judgmental approach here and so this provides an environment where individuals can become comfortable to admit areas of weaknesses, learn, grow and be empowered. We provide screening and need assessments so clients get the best help. The methods are unique, need based and highly creative.
Peculiar Place-Capacity Building Services is that beacon of hope that serve to reach people where they are and assist them in where they want to go. I have seen what self-empowerment can do for an individual and as such, I am seeking to devote my career in implementing these programs to assist with same. It was because of my sister's help that I graduated most literate from Primary school and so I too wish to make a difference. Peculiar Place Capacity Building Services is where Passion meets Purpose.
