IN THE CITY-WIDE SURVEY AND QUIZ, WE ASKED RESPONDENTS TO ESTIMATE THE LEVEL OF CHILD POVERTY IN MILTON KEYNES AND REFERRED TO NEIGHBOURHOODS WITH HIGH LEVELS OF DEPRIVATION. DETAILS ABOUT DEFINITIONS AND STATISTICS UNDERPINNING THESE QUESTIONS ARE PROVIDED BELOW.
Child poverty
At the end of the quiz, we report that roughly one in every six children in Milton Keynes lives in poverty.
This statistic is based on data published by the House of Commons Library in April 2024. It refers to children living in relative poverty, with the exact numbers showing that in 2022/23, 16% of children aged 0-15 in Milton Keynes North and Milton Keynes Central and 15% of children aged 0-15 in Buckingham and Bletchley were in relative poverty.
Someone is considered in relative poverty when they live in a household people living in households with income below 60% of the median in that year. Median income is the point at which half of all households have lower income and half of all households have higher income. In the case of children, relative child poverty refers to all children aged 0-15 who live in households with an income below 60% of the median in that year.
Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)
At the end of the quiz, we report on pockets of deprivation in Milton Keynes, with areas including Netherfield, Fullers Slade and Water Eaton, experiencing greater deprivation than other neighbourhoods.
The IMD is published by the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) and the map highlighting areas of deprivation in Milton Keynes is based on data from 2019 collected from each of the nations and recalculated them for so-called Lower layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs), which allows for granular analysis at neighbourhood level.
The index includes information about deprivation in areas such as income, education, health , crime and employment, but the exact set of indicators differs per nation. The index is therefore an indication of relative deprivation: it ranks areas against each other in terms of deprivation rather than give exact deprivation scores.
