Since May 2024 I have been the President of the Finnish Astronomical Society (FAS) and before that its Vice-President for a year. FAS is in charge of addressing the needs of professional astronomers in Finland, including organizing national astronomy conferences (e.g., Astronomers' Days 2024), and applying for grants to pay for Finland's Astronomy & Astrophysics journal fee and European Astronomical Society membership fee. As the FAS President and VP, I have been writing these grant applications for the past three years, all of which have been successful.
With just one year at the helm, I turned the idea of a joint Finnish-Swedish conference into the Nordic-Baltic Astronomy Days 2026 conference, which will be the largest gathering of Nordic and Baltic astronomy researchers since 1990.
I am the chair of both the Scientific and Local Organizing Committees of this conference.
I have so far secured ~22k EUR from national and international organizations to partially support the organizational costs and the costs of travel and accommodation of our junior participants. I hope to secure even more funding before the commencement of the conference in May 2026.
I convinced several senior researchers from across the Nordic-Baltic region to join the Scientific Organizing Committee of the conference. This diverse committee consists of at least one representative from each Nordic-Baltic country and a representative from each major field of astronomy. With their help, I aim to deliver a fruitful and memorable conference which will hopefully become a regular event in our region.
I am also working with Ursa to make outreach lectures a staple of conferences organized by FAS, the seeds of which I planted in Astronomers' Days 2024 (see here).
