Research:
Design Route for Topological Thermoelectric Materials: Solid materials can convert waste heat to useful electric power via a phenomenon called the thermoelectric effect, in which moving electrons carry both heat and electric current. The magnitude of this effect has historically been small, but a new class of crystalline solids called "topological materials" seem to exhibit unprecedented thermoelectric efficiency. We are building on recent theoretical work to define design principles for topological thermoelectrics and to construct a systematic search for identifying topological materials that maximize thermoelectric performance.
General Conditions for Goniopolar Transport: Materials that exhibit n-type transport in one direction and p-type transport in the perpendicular direction have been studied and named "goniopolar" by scientists at the Ohio State University. As a part of the Skinner research group, we are presently studying the theoretical aspects of these materials.
Thermoelectric Effect of Nodal Line Semimetals: Nodal Line Semimetals are materials where the conduction and valence bands touch in a line or a curve. We studied the enhancement of the thermopower under the influence of a magnetic field in such semimetals and predicted a linear in B enhancement in the Extreme Quantum Limit (where all the quasiparticles occupy the lowest Landau level), which is independent of T. Our article was recently published in PRX (Energy) and can be found here.
Thermoelectric Effect of Weyl Semimetal NbP: In collaboration with Prof. Sarah Watzman, University of Cincinnati, we studied the thermoelectric properties of the Weyl Semimetal NbP. The variations of thermoelectric coefficients with temperature and magnetic field obtained by the experiments from our collaborators were supported by our semiclassical calculations.
Topological properties of ZrTe_5 : Under the guidance of Prof. Awadhesh Narayan, carried out Density Functional Theory calculations to obtain band structure and properties of the topological insulator (TI) ZrTe_5 (both bulk and single layer). We studied the weak TI- strong TI phase transition of ZrTe_5. This work was done as the Masters' thesis research at the Indian Institute of Science.
