Research positions

Important information for prospective graduate students

There are typically 1 or 2 openings for graduate researchers in our group through UBC's MSc/PhD program each year. 

• All interested candidates should apply to the MSc program* at UBC.

• After the graduate admissions process  is completed, admitted students are strongly encouraged to reach out to Dr. Potter to inquire about 

• Due to high volume of inquiries, individual responses will likely not be feasible until after the admissions process is completed.

*The MSc/PhD program in Canada is equivalent to a standard 5-year PhD program in the United States. The MSc portion is 2-years and is research focused, and both MSc and PhD students are supported with a stipend from research (RA), teaching assistant (TA), and/or departmental fellowship awards. Transfer to the PhD program from the MSc program are does not require a separate application. Assuming satisfactory progress with courses and research, MSc students typically transfer to the PhD program (no separate application required, only a form signed by advisor) after one year. Direct appointments to the PhD program are not generally considered. 

Undergraduate researchers [Current UBC students only]

Our group typically has one or two positions open for undergraduate researchers in their 3rd or 4th years. Interested students should contact Professor Potter by email. 

• Pre-requisites for research PHYS402 (Quantum mechanics 2) with an A or better grade and a strong background in linear-algebra and familiarity with numerical computing (Python or similar).

• These positions are reserved for currently-enrolled UBC undergraduate students only, we are unable to host interns or visiting students from other universities at this time.
