The shooting of the film commenced on 24 September 2013 in London.[5] The team shot in Mauritius for the final part of the film starting on February 22, 2014. Two songs and other sequences were shot at the La Plantation Resort & Spa, Le Mridien, Intercontinental Resort, Bagatelle Mall of Mauritius and the Northern Beaches, with Mauritian extras also having participated in the shooting.[6][7]
The soundtrack of Humshakals is composed by Himesh Reshammiya and lyrics are written by Mayur Puri, Sameer and Shabbir Ahmed. The first single of the film was "Caller Tune", by Neeraj Shridhar and Neeti Mohan. The soundtrack was released on 26 May 2014.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 0%, based on six reviews, with an average rating of 2/10.[12] Saurabh Dwivedi of India Today stated "for Sajid Khan, I can only say that Humshakals will be listed in one of the worst films of the century."[13] Mihir Fadnavis wrote in his Firstpost review, "... sexual tomfoolery, shrieking and hamming aside, there's much more to hate about this 'family movie'. It's disturbing to see such an atrocious, regressive, misogynistic, sexist, homophobic cinematic product force-fed to paying audiences. I can understand that a comedy need not be 'safe', but what goes on in Humshakals is simply too horrifying to bear."[14] Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times rated the film 0.5 out of 5 and stated "With no story or comedy on offer, even Riteish and Ram are unable to save the day for Sajid Khan."[15] Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave it 0/5 stars and said the film was "[l]oaded with indecipherable dim wit" and "an odd mishmash of pathos and drudgery."[16] Writing in Emirates 24/7, Sneha May Francis claimed that it succeeded Khan's previous endeavor, Himmatwala, in becoming the worst Bollywood film ever.[17] Critic Sonia Chopra of Sify.com wrote "there are bad movies, and then there's Humshakals. The worst film of 2014 so far, in my book".[18] Dainik Bhaskar rated the movie as one of the worst films of the decade.[19]
Several of the cast members also lamented their involvement in the film. Bipasha Basu didn't participate in the film's promotions calling Humshakals "the worst experience of [her] life,"[20][21] and Esha Gupta warned family members not to see the film.[22] After the release of the film, leading actor Saif Ali Khan lamented that "I've been introspecting a lot and will never repeat a mistake that was Humshakals."[23]
The film received five Golden Kela Award nominations,[24] and won for Worst Film.[25] It also won two Ghanta Awards; the film won Worst Picture and Ram Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Riteish Deshmukh shared the Worst Actor award.[26][27]
The songs of the film were extremely popular, with the Kishore-Asha duet song "Hum Tum Gum Sum" being on the top of the charts for more than a year. The tune of the Rafi-Lata duet "Kahe Ko Bulaya" was even adapted as a religious song in subsequent decades. Kishore Kumar considered the song "Rasta Dekhe Tera Vyakul Man Mera" as close to his heart.
Unfortunately, in Humshakals the jokes don't improve. The film's climax is set in Khan's version of the British House of Commons, which isn't a parliament but a tacky ballroom with a green arch that has "House of Commons" written on it.
There's no reason for people to be dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns at the House of Commons, just as there's no logical explanation for why a private company would conduct its board meeting in Britain's lower house of Parliament. If you start questioning the logic and factual accuracy of Humshakals, you'll need valium instead of popcorn to survive the 159 minutes of the film.
In contrast Saif Ali Khan, the star of the film, is painfully awkward and entirely out of place in Sajid Khan's world. Humshakals was probably Saif's attempt at scoring a 'massy' blockbuster the way actors like Akshay Kumar have, but no matter how how much he woofs, dresses up as a woman and makes faces, Saif is not able to fit into the mould of stupidity that Sajid Khan has created for him.

Bipasha has been missing from the film's promotions while Sajid and his starcast of Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor, Tamannah and Esha Gupta have been travelling across the country for the publicity ahead of its release this Friday.Director Sajid Khan says Bipasha Basu is not promoting his upcoming film Humshakals as it is not about her.
Bipsaha has said she was disturbed after seeing the "end result of the film". "In these circumstances I didn't know how to promote a film with all honesty and that's why I thought it was better to stay away," Bipasha had posted on Twitter.
Actor Ajay Devgn, who collaborated with Sajid in the remake of Himmatwala, had in an earlier interview said he was aware that the film would fail while he was shooting for it. Sajid, however, disagrees with it.
"That's not true, because a day before the release of the film, we were celebrating in his (Ajay's) house. If an actor doesn't believe in the film, the actor doesn't promote the film. Ajay and I promoted Himmatwala for 22 days," Sajid said.
Humshakals is a comedy film, which is Sajid's forte but the director is anxious about the response of the audience. "I am not concerned about how much money it will make. I think when the going is good everyone will accept whatever you do. People know Sajid Khan's films as comic capers which make them laugh. They expect a comedy film from me and now I will give them only what they want," he said.
Actor Saif Ali Khan is trying his hand at a full-fledged comedy film for the first time with Humshakals. "I wasn't sure if Saif would agree to let his hair down and go so much beyond his usual performances for Humshakals. But he has surprised me with his acting. Directing him made me laugh out loud so many times. In the process of making this film, Saif and I discovered that we are very similar in a lot of ways," Sajid added.

While narratively the film is limited, emotionally it is adroit, and visually it is spectacular.
