In this project I will explore the effects of social media on society. I will be taking a social media addiction survey, reflecting on my results from the survey, and writing about my opinion on the impacts of social media.
Results: Healthy relationship with social media
Reflection: I feel like I do a pretty good job of limiting my social media usage and don't typically find myself super prone to scrolling for hours. I check Instagram maybe once a day or less and occasionally go on TikTok to find new recipes. I've set a time limit on both for about 20 minutes so if I find myself scrolling till it ends its a reminder and I'll get off my phone.
I chose these statistics because I find them a bit shocking. The effects of social media on my generation (gen z) and the younger generation is scary to think about and it's something I think more people should be more aware of.
I think social media has had an increasingly detrimental impact on society and young adults and youth especially, who are more vulnerable and prone to social media addiction and being influenced in negative ways. I read a book just recently called The Anxious Generation by Jonathon Haidt and I would highly recommend it, but it explores how social media has been effecting teens and preteens in increasingly negative ways. With the rise of social media and ages of when kids have access to social media becoming ever younger, the dangerous influences it on the younger generation are becoming more and more visible and prevalent. Social media has been proven to greatly influence the likelihood of feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety with unimaginable effects on the upcoming youngest generation who are growing up already with a constant connection to the internet and will have an even greater risk of future addiction and exposure to social media at a young and impressionable age.
From this assignment I was able to learn more able social media and its effects on society. This is a topic that I am really interested in and I enjoyed reading about it further.
