Apply the concepts of information exchange, nursing informatics and systems theory to the advanced practice role
Technology advancements over the last decade enabled the delivery of healthcare advancements in nursing care. Technology has helped evolve the nursing profession faster than one could have imagined. Through the use of information exchange, nursing informatics and systems theory, the nursing profession has become safer for the nurse and the patient. In addition, it enhanced the communication sector of the medical field with further protection of patient records. Understanding and utilizing new technology, as a leader, allows for growth to continue and enhances the knowledge of other individuals around them. In the following works that I have completed in my studies, you will appreciate my growth and utilization of new technology.
Bar-Code Medication Administration (BCMA) is still fairly new to the hospitals across the United States, and continues to be implemented within the hospitals that currently do not use this system. During my NURS 530 research with a classmate about the use of this technology as a nurse, I understand the safety behind the BCMA program is a core reason for its implementation. Personally, as a superuser for the BCMA program, I taught the technology to fellow nurses. Working on this project while teaching the BCMA system showed the importance of being open to acceptance of new technology and understanding the benefits from this technology to the nursing profession. One such benefit is the decreased medication errors by the nursing staff.
While being a full-time student at Capital University and working at Riverside Methodist Hospital on the Neuro Critical Care unit, our unit found an issue that needed to be resolved. With my knowledge of information exchange using technology, I was able to help support the group I worked with to solve the communication issue that was occurring. We found the exchange of information through emails was excessive from management and, as a result, the pertinent information was not being read. The group decided that one email per week from management containing the consolidated information from the excessive emails allowed staff time to read and comprehend the information. This led to “Talk to me Thursday” which, was a weekly email that went out containing all of the information condensed into one important email. We found staff knew more about what was going on throughout the unit and hospital by implementing this change, which improved communication between the staff and management.
Informatics does not only affect how the work is accomplished in the healthcare industry, but also how one can communicate and report issues that occur. Through the existence of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), many other technologies have evolved from this database. During my NURS 650 course, I researched this system and how it progressed while protecting the autonomy, justice, beneficence and non-maleficence of the stakeholders. EHR technology has increased communication between the patient and medical professional on a secure platform, allowing patients to view their medical records more easily than before the creation of EHR. Informatics created reporting systems for nursing professionals in a safe, secure and anonymous way. I have used this system on a few occasions and the results have led to further investigations, root-cause-analysis meetings, and changes in processes to create a safer environment for the patient and the nurse. This highlights my EHR knowledge and the reporting system benefits. Thus, I can instill the benefits of its use upon other nurses that I lead since I completed this research and experienced EHR first hand.
In NURS 530, I was able to take what I learned from both the lectures and Lynda tutorials to help support and visualize the positive correlation that occurs with nurse turnover increases and medication errors. In this paper, the graphs provide you with a visual of my knowledge of how to create and implement graphs to support my research to the reader. Graphs and tables are beneficial when supporting any issue that occurs. In NURS 641, I was able to demonstrate why the unit needed to hire another employee. From the knowledge obtained in NURS 530, I highlighted visually to management the increase in patients from year one to year two and a half and that it tripled over this time period without sufficient staffing. The use of informatics provided the audience a better perspective and concrete base to refer back to when making decisions because statistics do not lie. Moving forward in my career as a leader, this knowledge is going to be extremely beneficial when it comes to budgets and adding or subtracting employees.
I wanted to address the Lynda tutorials that I completed in NURS 530; unfortunately, I had lost some of my work on my last computer when my hard drive crashed and I was unable to recover these files. However, from completing the tutorials, I was able to learn lifelong skills using Excel, PowerPoint and creating graphs. Throughout this portfolio, you will observe the use of Excel to create graphs and enhance my PowerPoint presentations due to the completion of the tutorials. This knowledge has allowed me to create powerful presentations by creating a story for the audience to view through the use of PowerPoint and with the graphs providing financial numbers and statistical results to support my positions.
Expanding my knowledge in this technology area from the coursework and my personal experiences has proven to me the need for technology to continue to be implemented within all aspects of the nursing practice. Not only does this help to grow and impact the nursing profession, but it also improves the results for all the stakeholders involved. Creating and implementing new technology and using it in the medical field, we establish a safer healthcare environment which leads to better methods of communication exchange by all participants.
