Department of Civil Engineering
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh
Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam is currently working as a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET. Dr. Islam obtained his PhD in Earthquake Engineering from Saitama University, Japan in 2002. He also pursued JSPS postdoctoral research at the same university during 2005-2007. His research specialization focuses on various state-of-the-art topics, including bioengineering, climate resilient infrastructure, disaster resilient rural housing, land reclamation, earthquake resistant foundation design and soil liquefaction. His contributions in the field of vetiver-based Bioengineering and Disaster Resilient Infrastructures have been remarkably outstanding.
Dr. Islam’s nature-based, climate resilient and cost-effective methods for slope protection were developed based on his long-term research outcomes and field trials. These have been implemented in different projects of Bangladesh by Government Agencies, NGOs/INGOs (ADB, EU, IFAD, IOM, SIDA, UNCDF, UNDP), road projects of Cambodia and other private entities for the protection of road slope, canal bank, flood embankment, char land, village island, killa, hill slope and earth wall. He has also cooperated in establishing the ‘Vetiver Demonstration Center’ for vetiver application and capacity building at the Chattogram City Corporation in May 2018 which was inaugurated by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. This vetiver-based bioengineering technology is contributing to the national economy by creating job opportunities for marginal people. Local people have already taken entrepreneurial steps by establishing vetiver nurseries.
Dr. Islam has published 158 research articles in reputed journals, conferences and seminars. He has made more than 30 keynote/invited presentations at home and abroad. He has also supervised and examined 66 national and international postgraduate researches. Notably, he received 15 awards for research excellence which includes The King of Thailand Vetiver Awards 2015, The Vetiver Network International Award 2015, FORUM86 Research Excellence Award 2020 and Best Paper Award from Springer Nature, ISSMGE & JSCE. Besides, he received 9 awards for academic excellence which include Dr. Rashid Gold Medal, Sharfuddin Gold Medal, Dean’s Award, Monbusho Scholarship (Japan), University Merit Scholarships for academic excellence. Dr. Islam has received 24 awards in total for recognition of his excellence in academic achievements, teaching and researches to date Dr. Islam is dynamically contributing in national development by currently working as a Member, Panel of Experts or Consultants in different important projects of the country.
